I’m Sorry, But I Don’t Like You, So I’m Not Going To Give You Your Medication
From Pandagon: And I thought the government enforced pregnancy situation was bad before. Now pharmacists in Washington State are denying women who’ve had abortions access to antibiotics to prevent infection. This is punishment dished out by the self-righteous pure and simple. The procedure has been completed, its not even a factor anymore. The only fact is that medical professionals have chosen to endanger the health of a patient by denying them access to prescribed medication based on their improper behavior and religious beliefs. This is completely outrageous. One patient was even quizzed on why she needed the medication—unconscionable. It reminds me of a scene in the movie Magnolia when Julianne Moore’s character tries to pick up her perscriptions for herself (depressed) and her husband (on death bed) and is quizzed by the pharmacists on why she needs the medications and responds as anyone in that situation should by screaming “Shame on you!” The medications you take and why are between you and your doctor.
This self-righteous indignation crap is completely out of control. What happened to the law? What happened to professional ethics? Is my pharmacist going to have the right to deny me birth control next because they dont think a single woman should be having sex? Is a vegan pharmacist going to have the right to quiz me on why I have high chloresterol, and if they decide its from eating too much meat, will they have the right to deny me my prescribed medication? What if you’re a man and the pharmacist objects to sex and refuses to sell you condoms because you should be prepared to pay the consequences for having sex? What if we all have to start filling out questionnaires when we go the pharmacists so they can make sure we don’t make any lifestyle choices they find to be objectionable? Where does it end? Its a challenge to write anything but a string of expletives so foul, they would make Lenny Bruce embarrassed. These people are out of control, and if there is a god, he/she/it must be ashamed.
And it seems like they need reminding so here’s the American Pharmacists Association’s Code of Ethics: particularly this part: “A pharmacist avoids discriminatory practices, behavior or work conditions that impair professional judgment, and actions that compromise dedication to the best interests of patients.”
Since they violated the state law in Washington, they should be prosecuted. I can just see it now, hunger strikes in jail for the metaphorical martyrs. I hope Americans get sick of this kind chipping away at all our rights at the hands of the self-righteous. Its only going to stop when we say so.
This post from Firedoglake by Kevin K. of Catch.com illustrates what’s going on here pretty well I think. I’m not prepared to go as far as he and Taaibi do but I will agree that the Taaibi passage definitely applies to the religious right as it functions now. By the way, Taaibi writes some outstanding pieces for Rollingstone.
