I May be Unethical, But I’m Not Immoral
Anjeanette Damon blogs about Kathy Augustine’s blase summary of her impeachment at a Reno campaign stop:
Unfortunately, I was a little late and missed the part where she explained how and why she was impeached and censured for an ethics violation. But it was related to me by one of the audience members as such: “She was basically convicted of one charge. Using her office telephone and fax machine for personal use. And who hasn’t done that?”
Maybe we have, but did the state government decide to launch a year long investigation “…which resulted in her stipulation to three ethics violations of using her state staff to run her 2002 reelection campaign and a $15,000 fine– the largest ever imposed by the Ethics Commission?” Uhhh, no.
What do Kathy Augustine and Oscar Goodman have in common? In Goodman’s own words: “Ethics and morals are two different things. No one ever accused me of being immoral.”
Ah, how politicians like to parse. “Value voters” will be happy to learn that they can vote for all kinds of people like Augustine, Delay and Ney since they are just unethical–not immoral. Praise the Lord.
