The Minx Says “Yalla Yalla!” Gibson Supporters
The minx has been worried about the Gibson supporters today. I’ve been concerned for weeks about how they would recover from a Titus win in the Democratic primary, and its clear from comments at The Gleaner’s place that they’re even more dejected than I thought they might be. I remember what I felt like after campaigning for Kerry in 2004–it sucks to lose–plain and simple. And when I need inspiration, I always look to Joe Strummer whose personal dedication to the proliferation of music as a tool for social change is unparalled, and who was also just a lovely human being.
Music is my cure all–its ability to transform a mood, to communicate to a group of people, or even a nation, is a continual wonder to me. So I offer my best gift–a tune that begins in a meloncholy mood and quickly lulls you into a cautious optimism, and maybe, it’ll even inspire you, if you’re open to it.
My offering to you: Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros‘ “Yalla Yalla,” from the fabulous world music inspired Rock Art & X-Ray Style (download now). There are many great songs on this album, an album that grows on you with every listen, but “Yalla Yalla” is special. Its about being lost and finding your way back to someplace good–not necessarily a literal place–but some place that feels like home. If you have to drive 400 miles to a great concert or to visit a friend to bump you out of your inspirational funk, then that’s what you’ve got to do, but do it to a slow burning techno groove:
Groovin’, lets cut out of the scene, go groovin’
Groovin’, lets cut out of the scene, go groovin’
Drive, drive
Distance no object, rasta for I
Strummer begins this song in a rough voice for effect, because when you’re feeling demoralized or lost, you’re ragged and rough around the edges. But “Yalla Yalla” builds to a chorus that swells with a sense of hope. Strummer urges you not to forget your “best tai-kwon-do moves on a barrel of beer.” So, quick Gibsonites, step away from the bar. Step away from that fifth beer and say “Yalla Yalla” which means “Let’s Go!” in Arabic. Don’t forget your best tai-kwon-do moves! Nevada Democrats across the state need them for the upcoming compaigns–escpecially Dina Titus. So, Yalla Yalla Gibson supporters. Pick yourselves up, dust yourselves off and let’s go!
Yalla, yalla, yalla, ya-lah
Only to shine, shine in gold, shine
You can download the mp3 file and listen to it for twenty-four hours. I recommend listening to it at least three times for the proper effect. Give it a try. I only wish there was a twenty minute remix
