Reno and Beyond: I Knew I Was In Trouble When My Lawyer Was Forced To Take A Breathalyzer

- Who knew Harvey Whittemore was a terrorist? He doesn’t even wear a turban.
- The RGJ conducted a poll on the CD-2 race between Dean Heller and Jilly Derby:
Heller Derby Undecided
All 45% 37% 18%
Men 49 34 17
Women 41 40 19
Democrats 9 77 14
Republicans 73 7 20
Independents 43 40 17Two things catch my attention. First, there are a lot of undecided Repulicans for such a heavily Republican district. Second, there are a lot of undecided voters out there. That’s got to be scary for the Heller campaign.
- Hispanic-owned businesses along Wells Avenue celebrated the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month by helping their customers register to vote. I have a question? Why does Hispanic Heritage Month run from mid-September to mid-October? Who can keep track of that? Why isn’t it September 1st to the 30th? Aren’t Hispanics good enough for a real calendar month?
- Harry Reid calls for an investigation of his ancestors. Seriously though, I would be surpised if the Justice Department jumps all over this one what with their preoccupation with torture and wiretapping. It also presents some interesting dilemmas for an administration that has advocated for a government heavily influenced by religion.
- Fall approaches and I am a happy minx. As one of the husbands says, fall brings out the rutting elk in all of us. Plus, sleeping wrapped up in the covers against the crispy night air is one of my favorite things to do.
- Criminal charges in the HP snooping incident are expected next week from the California Attorney General’s office. The federal government is the only entity allowed to snoop into phone records without permission. Duh HP.
- Via Broadsheet: I think this is what you call a backlash to Feminism as it collides with current events. Homeland security chic from Italian Vogue.
- I guess some people think every woman could use some enhancement–even if that woman happens to be a 6 year old girl.
- A new Charlie Kaufman movie? I’d go all the way to Synecdoche for this one. I can’t wait. As Jay A. Fernandez eloquently notes: “Charlie Kaufman is that rare artist who expands the possibilities of his art form. His work is designed to be experienced more than read or seen. His filmed screenplays become beautifully melancholy windows into some of life’s most indescribable (and unavoidable) emotions.” Amen.
- Oh goody! Iran offers to help Iraq to establish “full security.” Just what the U.S. government wanted, right?
- Want $1,000? Get your congressman to sign the Punch Clock Agreement which is an agreement to put their public schedules on the web. That Sunlight Network is serious about this accountability and transparency stuff.
- A Las Vegas lawyer is forced to take a breathalyzer test after turning up in court to defend his client from a life sentence drunk and full of excuses. From Richard Abowitz’ Moveable Buffet:
Now the defendant in the case sits in jail. He says in an interview with KVBC that he has not heard from Caramagno since that day in court and has received no refund. Though he still wants a private attorney, he can no longer afford one. Caramagno, on the other hand, tells KVBC that, of course, he will give a refund to the client though he still seems to think he should represent the guy at the trial. Caramagno also claims in the interview he was not drunk.
This first video details the Caramagno’s late appearance in court, his claim that he was a victim of a hit and run but did not call 911 because he is “philosophically opposed” to it. He also claims to be suffering from a concussion saying:”my head has been the subject of many severe contacts.” Yeah, with a bottle of tequila.
In the second video, Caramagno is forced to take a breathalyzer in court. You know you’re in trouble when all the law enforcement officers in the room surround you. His blood alcohol level was .075. He finally admitted to having drinks the night before and ends up talking about his stress levels and recent deaths in his family.
