Ensign Is Not Worth Your Vote
This week, Senator Ensign proved he is not capable of learning from his or anyone else’s mistakes by resorting to the old and pathetic charge that anyone concerned about the rule of law and upholding the Constitution is “aiding the terrorists.” He probably still thinks there is a link between al Qeada and Hussein.
From Dana Milbank’s column today:
At about the time Pelosi was unveiling the “New Direction” brochures, Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) was out on the Senate floor, accusing Democrats of aiding the terrorists. “Al-Qaeda,” he said, sees “the lack of resolve in some of our leaders, and they seek to exploit it.”
The charge enraged Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who had come to the floor to talk about education.
“America is not tired of fighting terrorism,” she retorted. “America is tired of the wrongheaded and boneheaded leadership of the Republican Party that has sent $6.5 billion a month to Iraq when the front line was Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, that led this country to attack Saddam Hussein when we were attacked by Osama bin Laden.”
She continued: “And Americans are most certainly tired of leadership that, despite documented mistake after mistake after mistake . . . never admit that they ever do anything wrong.“
Way to go Landrieu.
For anyone still dithering over whether to vote for Jack Carter to take Ensign’s place in the Senate or not, Ensign’s yah vote on the Bush Administration’s warrantless wiretapping and extrajudicial military tribunals bills should have erased any doubt. When such respected Senators as John Warner, John McCain and Lindsey Graham and former Secretary of State Colin Powell take a principled stand to uphold the rule of law in this country and oppose the extrajudicial military tribunals bill being pushed through Congress, hack politicians like Ensign can only simper and preen and hope no one notices they stand for nothing other than their own campaign.
“Every senator and congressman should understand this is not about November 2006. This is not about your reelection,” Graham said. “This is about those who take risks to defend America.”
Ensign is thinking about November 2006. Politicians like Ensign want to scare you into voting for them by using the spectre of Bin Laden. As the Rude Pundit says: “Don’t let Osama Bin Laden tell you how to vote.”

It was good to see Powell might be coming of the closet - certainly opposing Bush administration… but… I’m wishing that he wasn’t coming out for McCain who speaks out both sides ofhis mouth…after the midterms there might just be a Democrat Powell might consider winking for? At the very least, that he will speak for the what’s best and right for the world. (My brother had great respect for Powell in the early days when he had the pleasure of working with him…nobody was talking openly about how/why he slithered away)
Today in downtown Reno, I heard the LVRJ/Zogby mantra about Carter not being able to catch Ensign over and over again out of the mouths of Dems. And I said something just like you did here. Vote for Bush-style torture or support Jack. End of story.
