I-580 Extension
I’m going to change the subject to something totally different but essentially local; hope not too many people mind. Does anyone know what’s going on with the I-580 extension bridge over Galena Creek? This was touted as an up-and-coming, local landmark and a pretty cool arch bridge. I know NDOT had a dispute with the contractor over construction methods and they mutually terminated the contract. I’ve also seen the structural steel for the bridge stockpiled at the intersection of 395 and Mt. Rose Hwy. Just anxious to see the thing built and curious if anyone out there knows what the scoop is.
I’d also be curious to read any comments people may have about this project or development/construction in general as our fair city grows. Good, bad, merely inevitable?

The original plan was for a two contracts - parts A and B. “A” was for the big bridges and “B” was for the roadway and interchange work.
When the contractor for Part A and NDOT had their falling out, NDOT put the remainder of part A AND all of part B into a NEW PART B.
Bids are due in on Oct 12 and NDOT is supposed to select the winning bid in before year-end with a current estimated completion for the entire project in mid-2010.

Thanks, Steve.
Why does Scott Macgruder still have a job? He’s been the head honcho during 3 major construction gaffes in less than 2 years.
In order of gaffdom:
1. Freeway Extension 395/580
2. McCarran Overpass supports
3. Repaving of 1-80 through Sparks
That bridge will NEVER be built. Count on it.
One of the bidders is Granite Construction.
List of approved Freeway Extension bidders…
C.C. Myers, Inc.
Granite Construction Company/ FCI
Kiewit Western Company
Traylor Brothers, Inc.
If Granite is selected, I am betting on the project being done on time and at the bid price, just like the train trench and other Granite projects. I am not at all sure of how other bidders might perform, if they are selected.
Has anyone noticed the current frenzy of activity on Virginia St between 2nd and 4th? Granite got the go-ahead from the council for that renovation less than two weeks ago and they are already tearing hell out of the sidewalks and repouring concrete (on both blocks at the same time).
Fast development is a welcome surprise.
