Reno and Beyond: Thank You For the Whitewater Park Jim Litchfield

- And just when you thought it was safe to step back into Sparks…..citizens are trying to string up the city attorney, Chet Adams, because he wanted to settle the Lazy 8 lawsuit.
- Some Silver Stage High School student left their hit list just lying around like it was a sack of beans. That’s never a good idea, especially when ten Lyon County Sheriffs are on the list. Hopefully the police can track the offender down and find that its just some abnormally strong and misplaced teen angst.
- Yikes, Reno housing prices will drop by 17.2% by the fourth quarter of 2008. Everybody strap in for a bumpy ride. Its projected to be the second biggest drop in the nation after Coral Gables, Florida. Hair flip to the lovely Diane Cohn.
- Dina Titus’ new ads–not so good.
- If you haven’t noticed Stanley Scandalmonger’s skills with graphics, there’s a new one up today starring Dean Heller and I think Cheech and Chong.
- Cohousing comes to the region. What on earth is cohousing?
The goal behind cohousing, which originated in Denmark, is threefold: to create community, sustainability and affordability. Cohousing communities consist of private, environment-friendly homes along with extensive common facilities that provide places for community activities. Dining, recreation, guest rooms, library and yoga workout rooms are typical for a common house. Future residents are involved early in the design and development phases so that the community reflects their priorities.
Sounds suspiciously communist-like. I’m sure someone will protest it.
- The Twelve Horses crew (who help pay the hosting on this site sometimes) just posted a new podcast interview with Jim Litchfield, who was instrumental in the installation of the Whitewater park downtown. Maybe we should name the new pedestrian plaza after him? He certainly deserves if for seeing such a brilliant idea to completion. I watched downtown change the day the park opened. The transformation has been amazing.
- Remember when smash and dash used to describe a purse snatching? Do you think we could do this with the Liquid Lounge? Maybe four of us? Its not that big and there are all kinds of forklifts in the vicinity thanks to all the construction projects.
- Sacrificial lamb attacks from the unemployment line. As Andrew Sullivan says, if this is true, Hastert is toast. That Shimkus guy should be too.
- Strangest Google search that brought someone to Discontents: “strummer and poster and shepard and fairy.”

[...] Reno and Its Discontents, a popular local Reno blog that discusses politics, development, culture, media and various other issues affecting the area, and was recently featured on CNN, gave us and our interviewee, Jim Litchfield a little proverbial ink yesterday regarding our podcast interview with him. [...] For those of you who don’t know, Jim Litchfield was one of the main forces behind the creation of Reno’s downtown whitewater park at Wingfield Park. Jim is the owner of Fluid Concepts and president of the Truckee River Foundation, and also serves on Reno’s Citizen Advisory Committee and as the designer of the whitewater park, played a huge role in Reno’s downtown revitalization. Maybe I need to try and get on the committee? Anyway, on with the interview: [...]

Cohousing isn’t too communist-like: private ownership of individual condominiums, bought on the open market, created by private developers, individual kitchens, no shared bathrooms, even private backyards sometimes. That doesn’t mean it won’t get protested, but in general the end result is nicer than what would otherwise get built somewhere. Community connections, knowing your neighbors, etc.: that’s just a nice bonus.
I agree—–just kidding…..thanks for providing mre info.
