Discontents Poll Results: The New Pedestrian Plaza Shall Be Named Plaza Del Sesso

Well, as you can see by the number of answers added by our readers, this poll got a LITTLE crazy. But crazy in a good way! Okay, the official winner was probably the most normal choice: Virginia Square. Its not creative, its not sexy, its not even all that descriptive, but it is where it is–off of Virginia Street. Its kind of funny that people went for that way more than Virginia Plaza. Hmmm. And while I appreciate everyone who thinks the plaza should be named after moi, those seven of you, and you know who you are, might need to think about a new hobby. Second place goes to “A New Place to Score Meth,” which was ovbiously submitted by a very optimistic reader. I bet you $1 million dollars the city council doesn’t pick that one. I was pleasantly suprised that some of you liked “The Overground” because I cheated and added that one after I designed the original poll. That means you liked the allusion to the whole London Underground thing. Virginia Plaza came in at the bottom of the top group of answers with 4 votes.

Now, on to the bottom tier! You shouldn’t be offended if you submitted an answer that no one else liked–it just means that can’t appreciate the particular genius that is you–you know, the person who wants to call the pedestrian plaza something like “hooker row.” There was a four way tie between “Griffin’s Gulch,” “Adventure Plaza,” “hooker row,” and “Tweekers Delight.” In a tow way tie we have the poetic “Promises Kept Plaza” and “Mapes Plaza.” Okay, each of these got one vote: “Trench Central,” “West Side Plaza,” “Yet Another Sierra Square,” “3rd St. Blues & Beyond” and my personal favorite, “Plaza Del Sesso.” “The Montage’s Backyard” got bubkus (is that how you spell that?).

To the person who proposed Plaza Del Sesso, do you mean Sesso in the “gender” way or the “sex” way? Either way, I like it–its naugty, memorable and still allows for the whole hooker angle.

Thanks for participating you creative bunch of freaks you!

[...] Did you know that Ken Layne, former editor of Sploid, is the latest “semi-long” guest editor for Wonkette? How about that for another Reno-DC connection? First there was Rove, then me, and now Ken. I know what he and his little dog look like so I’ll be able to spot them when they start cruising the newly finished Plaza del Sesso with his “semi-long.” That should be fun. [...]

I’m happy Virginia Square “won” this little contest… it is consistent with my overall strategy of defining neighborhood centers as squares along Reno’s primary north-south and east-west axes… Keystone Square, Ralston Square, Virginia Square, Flanagan Square, etc.. They should do it.

I voted for the Overground… Even though I don’t think it’d be a good choice to actually compare us in any way to London so it wouldn’t fly, but I just liked it.

I saw the real life model at the council meeting on Wednesday and it’s pretty!

Haha I submitted Plaza del Sesso. Reno has always had kind of a campy dark comedic history to it…I mean Nevada even lied about its population to become part of the Union, so it has a looong dark comedic history. I figured ‘Plaza of the Sex’ in Italian aptly fit, and can be applied to any number of things, such as hookers, crack whores, pimps, Nevada’s brothel history, and of course, us Italians! Which had a significant part in the development of some of our historic areas.

My vote would be for “Downtown Plaza” - actually plazas - and I hope they don’t stop at just two blocks. I REALLY want to see a third trench cover (between Virginia and Center) supplemented by a land plaza constructed on the soon to be vacated downtown bus station property - when the station moves from its current location to the cleared-off block east of the bowling stadium.

Would it require demolition of an ugly old parking structure that currently blockades the center of the downtown?

Yep. And, the northern portion of that building that is not over the trench could also be converted to a plaza, perhaps with free-standing restaurants and/or shops at various points.

Would it be a marvelous investment in the future of downtown?

Absolutely!!!!!

Together, the plazas would create continuity, beauty and much-needed open space right in the EXACT HEART of downtown Reno’s entertainment district. And, it would allow the area to host many more outdoor concerts and other events without needing to close and reroute the downtown streets in order to do so.

Think about Y’all - there is plenty of suitably blighted property on other blocks where the city could construct a new, better looking and much more efficient parking garage :-)
