A Closer Look At The Nevada Gubernatorial Election Result

Fun with the CNN Exit Poll:

The kids are down with Gibbons:

People aged 40-59 voted in about the same percentages for Gibbons and Titus (47% to 46%). Gibbons won the 18-29 year old vote and the 30-44 year old by a whopping 13%. This results are a little unusual–nationally, younger voters are usually less conservative and older voters usually less so.

Inexplicably, the poor love Gibbons. The rich like Gibbons and Titus in equal amounts:

Those making under $15,000 per year or less favored Gibbons by 15% (52% to 37%)! Perhaps even more surprisingly, those making over $200,000 per year voted almost evenly for Gibbons and Titus (45% to 43%). Titus got the $15,000 to $50,000 vote which accounts for only 26% of the state population.

No surprise here–Titus wins the overeducated vote:

Postgraduates voted for Titus by 14%(55% to 41%). As did the folks with no high school diploma (54% to 36%). Titus narrowly won over college graduates (49%) while those without college degrees (also a larger percentage of the population) voted for Gibbons in larger numbers (51%).

So what killed Dina? The rurals, but not totally. If you look at the exit poll questions regarding the Iraq War and the approval rating for President Bush, the people who disapproved of either or both, voted for Dina in large percentages, but not in as large percentages as those who approved of Bush and the war and voted for Gibbons. Bush supporters were much more likely to vote for Gibbons than people who disapproved of Bush were to vote for Titus.
