The Gift of Music: The Replacements’ Alex Chilton Live
Christopher Good, who helps run the Peace, Poetry & Music night at Dreamers reminded me of The Replacements the other day. It seems there’s a lot of us old punks with impeccable taste hanging around Reno, but you sure wouldn’t know it by looking at us.
Luckily for all of us, I was able to find a live version of “Alex Chilton,”which somehow tells the story of my long life in just two short lines:
“I’m in love, what’s that song?/I’m in love with that song.” Yes. I’m in love, what’s that song? I’m in love with that song.
What song are you currently in love with? I’ve fallen in love with “Alex Chilton” and Alex Chilton all over again.

Great clip! I think it’s funny how popular the Replacements are/were, in spite of getting no airplay (at least none in the midwest, where I was in the late 80s.) Everyone I knew had their records back then - they were quite popular with no corporate radio support.
I’m totally, totally in love with the Placemats. Too cool that you posted this.
The I’m-in-love-with-that-song at the moment is “Dinner With The President” by The Evens (altho the whole album is great).
Ha! Folk punk. I thought that guy looked familiar–its Ian McKaye. Thanks for the recommend.
