Our Own Frankenstein

U.S. government policy has created its own big fat problem in Iraq and its name is Moqtada al Sadr. What I’ve been hearing from my source is that very early on in 2004, we could’ve and should’ve jailed Sadr for the murder of prominent exile Abdul Majid al-Khoei. This solution as actually voiced by Iraqis in Baghdad. There was even a warrant for his arrest issued by an Iraqi judge. However, the CPA and the military could not agree on whether to enforce the warrant or not. The military was fearful that imprisoning or otherwise taking care of Sadr would cause riots among the Shiites. Unfortunately, Bremer and the CPA lost its battle with the military and Sadr survived. Now he has people in the military, police and the legislature–he’s too powerful to touch. What a mess. And we have only ourselves and our ill-informed exile sources to thank.
Read about Sadr in-depth at Newsweek. And Kirk Karaway has a post on “unleashing the Shiites, ” which really means, unleashing Sadr.
