Reno and Beyond: Prices Are Going Up

- I’ve been neglecting some of the downtown construction projects. But where I’ve failed, Downtown Makeover Dude has succeeded (get an RSS DMD). DMD let me know that Grant’s Landing, the first downtown townhome project, is raising their prices considerably from their initial announcement earlier this year. The entry price went from $150,000 to $350,000ish. Wow. wow.
- And did you know there was a downtown parking study that determined two garages with approximately 500-600 spaces each are needed to accommodate downtown needs over the next thirty years. I hate the idea of parking structures just for parking–they are a huge waste of space and aesthetic possibility. Wasn’t there a downtown consultant who told the city just over a year ago that parking structures should be hidden within or beneath buildings? Too bad they didn’t just build a huge garage under the Events Center when they had the chance, huh?
- But by far the downtown development with the most potential is the possible Irish pub that will inhabit the retail space next to Starbucks on California and Virginia. Please, or please, let there be singing! Reno needs an Irish bar where they sing Irish drinking songs like “Wild Rover” complete with beer bottle table knocking. The minx is pretty easy to please.
- Asa Gilmore of Ruckus Visual Arts, the Nevada bad ass who brought us Nevada Bad Ass, previously reviewed on this site, has a new short up on the web called Sisyphus. In his words: “The film is the result of collaboration between myself and a well known San Francisco actor named Jack Halton. It relates the myth of Sisyphus to modern day life with a somewhat existentialist slant.” It also features music from the San Francisco band Ubzorb (who play in Reno periodically). Aren’t Sisyphus and existentialist slant redundant? Anyhow, its good–check it out.
- Have you guys heard about the Holland Project? An enterprising group of folks are raising money for a non-profit all-ages music and arts venue modeled after successful ventures like the Vera Project in Seattle. Young people will be able to learn the ins and outs of the music business as well as create and display visual arts. Holland will provide workshops, classes and forums for community involvement, activism and service. I was sold by a Nietzshe quote in their promotional materials: “Without music life would be a mistake.” Absolutely. Visit their blog or their myspace site and help them out. Dan Gustin supports them–why shouldn’t you?
- Former federal prosecutor indicts BushCo for defrauding the United States in a new book, United States v. George W. Bush et al. You can read excerpts from the book on the wonderful TomDispatch.com. Here is the first one.
- Enjoy this interview with Tom Waits from Pitchfork Media. The photo alone is worth the click. Because of the holidays, I can’t rationalize buying myself Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, the new Who album and The Clash: The Singles. But I wouldn’t mind if someone else bought them for me…..
- Well so much for those three weddings. What is with these people. At least Pamela Anderson seemed to have a little class inpsite of her choices in men unlike Britney Spears, who was recently seen without pants on. On Purpose! Why are these people famous?

Right on for promoting Holland! It is greatly needed in Reno and will be amazing once the huge amount of fundage is raised. There’s a benefit show at XOXO Bar on Saturday night with some of the city’s finest bands, by the way…
And, the CD (of local bands) to raise money for the Holland Project is for sale at the Never Ender at 518 W. 2nd http://www.neverenderreno.com
Dammit! I was afraid that was going to happen to the price of those condos …guess I’ll have to drop out of that race now.
But, I wanted to add a plug for the Minx’s paraphenalia. You can see a link to her store to the left of your screen, pic of a teeshirt.
I bought a cute little chick Discontents teeshirt about 6 months ago and I wear it proudly. Today I wore it to work and got quite a chuckle out of watching my coworkers hit the internet to look the site up. It’s printed across the back with the divine Minx logo lady on the front.
Just do it! It will make you smile!
NVMojo: I should put you on staff–you obviously work for free!
Marko and fuschia–thanks for the tips.
aw shucks!
Hang in there, baby!
Tom Waits is on The Daily Show right now.
If its the stories from the race track–I’ve seen it. I’m on satellite so I can see it again at 10pm. Thanks for the heads up–he’s a funny dude.
What a lovely anti-war statement he just made. I love Tom Waits.
