The Gift of Music: Holly Cole’s “I Can See Clearly Now”

Holly Cole’s album of Tom Waits’ songs, Temptation, is one of my favorite all time CDs ever made–seriously–its amazing and better than anything Scarlett Johansson can do. If you like Tom Waits, you will love this CD. And if you hate Tom Waits and aren’t opposed to cabaret so sultry and smart it makes you swoon, you’ll probably love this CD. Cole is a sophisticated vocalist full of irony, smoky sex appeal, humor, and even a bit of melancholy. She’s a real artistic rarity who crosses genres as often as that damn chicken crosses the road and wears a lyric better than Jacky O ever wore a Chanel suit. I can’t urge you to buy Temptation enough. I can’t even pick a favorite song from the CD because they are all that good although “Jersey Girl,” “Invitation To The Blues,” “Tango Til They’re Sore,” and “(Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night” are right up there. And she’s made one of the better Christmas CDs out there.

Unfortunately, Cole doesn’t make any videos, at least videos that have made it to YouTube yet. Which slightly related YouTube video should I pick for this post? The video of Canadian figure skater Kurt Browning skating to her version of “Don’t Fence Me In” (who knew that song could be so sexy?), the video a cross-dressing admirer made of “Tea for Two,” or the cringe inducing video of someone’s lasik eye surgery using “I Can See Clearly Now” as the soundtrack (from Don’t Smoke In Bed)? Hmmm……get ready to cringe.

So “cringe inducing” I couldn’t finish it. Her Tom Waits interpretations are magical though which is something you usually can’t say about covers.

A pretty good version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” as well. One of my fave xmas songs.

love this song, hate this YouTube video, had to hide the screen so I could hear the song and not watch that freaking eyeball job!

but, hey, thanks for the recommend on Holly! I’m gonna buy the cd. How do you find such cool things, minus the eyeball surgery??
