A Chat with John Edwards

“I think that there’s great opportunity for change if we actually have some courage and stand up for the things that America should be standing up for, and we engage the American people in bringing about the change from the ground up, instead of from the top down, which I think is a mistake.”

That’s how John Edwards opened up our conversation, right after he had finished with a “town hall” meeting at the Grand Sierra Resort. The former Vice Presidential candidate announced his intention to run for the 2008 Presidency on December 27th in New Orleans. And just a day later in Reno, we were able to get a few minutes of his time for a face-to-face chat. That’s right, Reno and its Discontents had a brief one-on-one with Senator Edwards.

Unfortunately for you, though, this is just the teaser. Sorry folks! But we will have more of our conversation with Senator Edwards for you tomorrow. So check back.

So, what should America stand for that it doesnt already? What was his answer? Ensure Americas Greatness?….America is already the Greatest country in the world…..Transform our country into what?…blah blah blah…Change from the Ground up? Does that mean majority rules? I thought we lived in a republic, where the people we elect were suppose to represent our beliefs and vote on our behalf?

Anybody got a clue how many people were there? Clearly they were expecting about a third of the attendance they got. Conflicting reports in the media of course.

John, he spent the whole evening speaking about how the Bush administration has damaged our reputation around the world and that what we need to do is earn back the “political capital” Bush squandered. In other words, America doesn’t stand so clearly for what it used to thanks to our endorsement of torture, wiretapping our citizens, ignoring our allies, and the Bush doctrine of preemptive war. Our allies don’t respect us as they used to and our enemies don’t fear us as they used to thanks to this administration’s incompetence and bad policy.

And of course change from the ground up is a reference to making sure those we vote for do actually represent our beliefs and vote on our behalf. The results of the last election demonstrated that the majority of the American people did not feel their congressional leaders were listening to them. How do you change that? Grassroots political organizing. It has everything to do with maintaining a functional (rather than dysfunctional) republic.
