Reno and Beyond: Macho Democrats?
- Attention foodies! If you have $95 to throw down on some good food and wine, The Steakhouse at Grand Sierra is hosting another “Dinner with the Winemaker” on Monday, January 29 at 6:00pm featuring the wines of Benziger vineyards Of course you may not be interested in lobster tamales or pomegranate sorbet. Good, that means more for me.
- The last sentence of Richard Critz’s letter to the RGJ editor demonstrates the problem with using inductive logic. Supporting nuclear energy would be evidence of bipartisanship, absolutely, if you say so Richard. I’d believe Reid “conversion” to bipartisanship if he supported limiting all married couples to one child who they must dress in dog clothes. The country would be a much more tolerable place. I hope Harry is paying attention.
- Inside Nevada Politics attempts to tackle the thorny problem of sissie Democrats, otherwise known as Democrats for gun control, but Brad Ellsworth does better job of pointing out the potential problems with “Macho Dem” strategy. It sure didn’t work for Titus. And as for the whole Kerry gun photo-op, that didn’t work because it didn’t seem authentic–like much of what Kerry did. Setting up Democrats as anti-gun may be a Republican strategy but that doesn’t make it so. There are plenty of old and new school gun-happy Democrats like Rep. John Dingell of Michigan, who proudly displays his hunting trophies in his Capitol Hill office. But unless one of those trophies is a Muslim from his hometown of Dearborn, Michigan, Right-wing haters like Debbie Schlussel will still thinks he’s a sissie. All people from Dearbornistan are suspect.
- Nevada Republican Party Chair Paul Adams retains his job despite his Giulianiesque document leak, failing to field strong candidates this election cycle, and losing several constitutional offices.
- Clive Owen has never been under-appreciated by me (I can’t believe I haven’t written a tribute to his considerable, um, acting skills yet). Children of Men is a fantastic movie with a rather whimsical performance by Michael Caine and a charmingly disheveled performance by Mr. Minx, uh, I mean Owen. Chiwetel Ejiofor, another one of my favorite actors, is once again surprising. I can’t get enough of him. With his gentle voice and manner, Ejiofor often plays against type. More than that I cannot say or I’ll spoil the movie.
- The LasVegasGleaner took the time to round up all the negative editorials and columns written about new Governor Jim Gibbons in the mainstream media at his place, and Nevada Today predicts that Gibbons is already a contender for Time’s worst governor title. It must’ve taken him hours on Sunday which begs the question–is Hugh Jackson a Christian? The obvious answer is no, otherwise he wouldn’t spend so much of the Sabbath collecting evidence of the god-fearing Gibbons (although he never wears it on his shoulder). Jackson is a godless blogger going to hell like all the other shrill liberal bloggers out there. Please pray for him.
- Dullard Mush notes that Congress got yesterday off to watch the big football game. I think its asinine for anyone to get the day off in order to watch a football game, but at least they’re only getting one day off versus the two days they used to get off EVERY WEEK under the Republicans. And some of them actually had the temerity to whine about the change. I don’t care what party you support, I think we can all agree that these bozos should be working as hard as we do–and if they aren’t–vote ‘em out.
- Arnold has turned into Hillary Clinton–proposing health care for all.
- Debbie has some kind of obsession with Oprah’s bowel movements. Actually, she seems to have some kind of unhealthy obsession with Oprah–kind of like the unhealthy obsession I have with Debbie. However, I promise you that I will never talk about Debbie’s poop or call her Debbie Hussie (except this once, and only to make the point that calling Oprah “HOprah” is stupid).
- I know its wrong, but sometimes its fun to watch someone reap what they sew–especially when its the slowly imploding Bill O’Reilley.
- The newest front in the US’ war on terror is Somalia.
- The Christian right is a “deeply undemocratic movement” says Chris Hedges, author of American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. He makes some good points about their leadership in this interview on Salon.com (subscription).
- Angelina Jolie calls her baby Shiloh a “blob” with an honesty that is kind of refreshing although I don’t know that I’d be happy if I were Shiloh. And then Jolie goes on to criticize Madonna’s “illegal” adoption And as usual, The Gallery of the Absurd has the best commentary on the subject. Wickedly funny.
