Reno And Beyond: Blue Thongs And Red Hats, Ladies Who Lunch Battle For Supremacy
- In the rumor mill: Board of Regents Chair Bret Whipple was either in Carson City meeting with “people” about the whole “we had a chancellor, then we didn’t, then we did” incident on Monday, or he was at least talking to “people” in Carson City, presumably about Rogers’ replacement before Rogers rescinded his resignation. That must have been when Patty Wade got one of her calls about taking the job. Anyway, while Whipple was in Carson City, “Sen. Bernice Matthews, Regent Steve Sisolak and former Clark County Manager Thom Reilly brokered a truce between Rogers and regent James Dean Leavitt” before Rogers could finish packing up his office as reported in the LV Sun. Maybe Whipple shouldn’t have left Leavitt unaccompanied. And where was Knecht?
- The war of ladies who lunch and their apparel of choice has begun.
- It seems as if new Governor Gibbons has been successful in labeling a bill Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio is introducing to give Washoe County Schools access to the same funding the Clark County School District gets on the real property transfer taxes as a simple tax increase. How else do you explain the fact that Raggio is “introducing” the bill rather than “supporting” it.
- As the Gleaner reports, Nevada is hosting the first Democratic candidate face-off (so far anyway). I hate data entry too. Thank goodness the state Dems got the Caucus 2008-related information about all the debates, candidate forums etc., up somewhere. The last update on the Washoe County site is from December 29th.
- Thanks to Dullard Mush, I don’t have to claim this blog is the best god damned blog in Nevada, its now an incontrovertible fact (although I object to being classified as a strictly “political blog”). It just goes to show you that its all about the links–links are often the completely bogus currency of the blogosphere. Whatever–we’re still the best.
- Bill Marriott (yes, those Marriotts) starts a blog. I remember when the last Hot Shoppe closed in Bethesda, Maryland–that’s how the Marriotts started. Technology-challenged Bill Marriott writes his thoughts on note cards he carries around in his breast pocket–a charming habit he shared with my grandfather. I wonder what he writes about the porn his hotels show as a part of their pay-per-view programming? My grandfather didn’t write about that–he didn’t have pay-per-view.
- Bill Marriott gets the significance of blogs, but does the NYTimes’ David Carr (a.k.a., The Carpetbagger), who described blogs as “a large yellow Labrador: friendly, fun, not all that bright, but constantly demanding your attention?” Uh, is one of us supposed to be the dog in this scenario? And how would he describe his foray into video? A little like a cocker spaniel?
- Spocko’s Brain and his blog finally made the main stream media.
- Read David Neiwert on Tom Tancredo’s history as an extremist and perspective on his ridiculous presidential bid.
- Wow, Josh Marshall is onto to a story that began with the firing of Reno-based U.S. District Attorney Daniel Bogden and might be ending with the firing of up to nine other U.S. Attorneys, at least some of whom are in the middle of corruption investigations of Bush administration officials and Republican lawmakers. What do you think that’s about?
