Reno and Beyond: Dada Me Surprised

Republican Automatons, George Grosz
- I got my windows cleaned today. Good help is so hard to find.
- La Bussola is moving away from WeFi. I’ll miss their window displays.
- The Andy Warhol exhibit is opening at the Nevada Museum of Art tomorrow. From the NMA website:
The exhibition also provides a unique opportunity to view a large selection of complete portfolios featuring some of Warhol’s most recognizable prints — including images of Marilyn Monroe, Jacquelyn Kennedy, Mick Jagger, and the Campbell’s Soup cans. Additionally, the exhibition examines the complex relationship between Pop art and more traditional forms of artistic expression, and places special emphasis on how Warhol blurred the boundary between high and low art.
Honestly, I think Warhol took Dadaism (the Berlin and Cologne schools anyway) and removed its heart and soul. But I’m no art expert.
- Speaking of Dada (how do you like that obscure segway!), is Reno ready for the “Dada Motel?” Not to be confused with the Dada Hotel in Tuscaloosa. From the “press release: “Reno’s Primary Artist’s show for Reno’s Artists by people who know what Reno is all about.” Uh, duh. This is going to make some of Reno’s “primary artists” mad, but is it possible to sound any more pretentious? They are obviously not taking their inspiration from the Berlin/Cologne School of Dada. Still, the idea is kind of cool—the primary artists who know what Reno is all about want to take over motels on 4rth street during the last week of June and turn it into a massive street fair. If you want to join them, join their tribe.
- I think we all know what happened here. The minx has a certain power–even over long distances. I can’t believe he had the nerve to blame it on his cell phone.
- Dullard Mush has the first part of his interview with Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly, Barbara Buckley.
- Urbanblog ponders the Grand Sierra Resort’s approach to resort development in Reno. His point about the influence that GSR should have on downtown development in absolutely right. Remember, GSR was the first Reno hotel to raise its rates–a strategy RSCVA Chair Oppenheimer endorses. We’ll see if their courage to think outside the box pays dividends. I think it will.
- Get ready semi-successful bloggers, it might be time to pay the man.
- My beloved Pew Research Center released a report on the top ten public opinion new stories of 2006, as well as the stories that never really gained much traction.

I know people who work at GSR. Their high rates have resulted in 30% occupancy and no business. Tips are almost nothing and people are quiting. Condos are not selling either. The developers don’t know what they are doing.
Well, if there’s any positive slant on La Bussola, it’s that Cheney St. is only a few blocks from me!
About GSR, I actually work for them, maintain 3 different web sites related to the project, and because I maintain the sites I know exactly how many people reserve units, register interest etc.
While sales have been slower than expected, they ARE selling the units, they ARE on track as they remodel the top foors, they actually expanded their plans for the water park, and they are doign a phenominal job booking events.
The Hilton’s occupancy numbers were just as bad before GSR took over, thats why GSR has elected to convert so many floors of their tower to hotel-condos.
They arent expecting to boost room occupancy until they add the luxury spa, waterpark etc. They are not stupid, they know just changing out the logo and slapping on a new coat of paint wont do the trick.
As for the disgruntled employees, there’s always two sides to the story. My friend’s dad works in the sports book there. And his account is GSR came in, and raised the standards they expect from employees. If you are going to market yourself as a luxury resort, you have to have employees that reflect that…I can understand and agree with that concept. So of course the employees are miserable right now, they are going through a big transition…thats never easy.
Don’t forget, ther plan is a 7 year plan, not overnight. They fully intended to grow slowly from the beginning, as to not implode their own company.
I thought *I* was the only one who loved the Pew Research Center!
I get so frustrated when some lame research gets all sorts of PR and nobody bothers to see how solid it is.
I mean I love Dove Dark Chocolate, but you have to wonder when the research on the benefits of Dark Chocolate is underwritten by …wait for it…
Dove! And only Dove dark chocolate is tested. Please.
Good for them for understanding the maw of the health publications, but someone please ask how big the sample size in some of these studies!
Nice blog!

Oh no, and I worship Andrew Kohut!
Yeah, I hear they are selling as well. I dont understand all the resistance to what GSR is trying to do..I mean, it would suck if you lost your job because of it of course, but as far as trying to build a luxury result, well, what’s wrong with that Reno?
Thanks to tippin’ people off to me post Myrna! Nice busy day over at ‘t Urban Blog
Cheers!
We’ve gone to movies at the GSR for the past two weekends. If things are so slow, why is the GSR so crowded on the main floor and basement floor with people?
Wah about La Bussola moving but I’ll follow them. Thanks for the heads up.
Hi, I really apreciated this website! Thanks
