Reno and Beyond: Happy President’s Day
- The Imperial Bar and Lounge keeps sounding better and better. First I found out that Matt Marcewicz from Washoe Wine Company put together their wine list, and then I found out that the owners are from Chicago—one of the great centers of hedonistic comfort food and drink. Does that mean they’ll be importing Gold Coast Dogs? There will be no gambling and no smoking since they are serving food right? I have a feeling that the Imperial may be my new biggest risk as far as maintaining my anonymity goes.
- And in city council news, DMD reports that Real Estate Associates, the developer of 10 North Virginia Plaza, was given the axe, and zoning change requests for Keystone and Fifth and the Parklane Mall are going back to their Neighborhood Advisory Boards for more discussion. And DMD is doing his best to get the city to declare his neighborhood a historic district due to its 1900-1930 era bungalow architecture.
- Want more on the Gibbons’ FBI probe? The NYTimes writes that Gibbons told an “unnamed company executive” at Warren Trepp’s eTreppid company to send emails to his private email because it “does not go through anyone else.” Gibbons blames the “inaccurate and false information” in the latest Wall Street Journal story on Dennis Montgomery’s lawsuit against Warren Trepp and says that the email conversation in which Warren Trepp’s wife reminds her husband not to forget “the money you promised Jim and Dawn,” and in which he scolds her for sending him a message, is referencing campaign contributions. Uh huh. Except Jon Ralston tells us that those contributions were already made. I always demand that anyone (Bjorn the Houseboy) sending me a message about a perfectly legal campaign contribution to “Erase this message from your computer right now!” In the Washington Post, a law enforcement official warned that the “no conclusions have been reached about whether any crime was committed.” And guess what other corrupt public official comes up when you search for Warren Trepp? Tim Noe, the Ohio man who stole $50 million from the state government through various investment schemes. What’s that saying about laying down with fleas?
- In their infinite wisdom, legislators like Jim “under FBI investigation” Gibbons, Ty “press hound box of rocks” Cobb, Maurice “Ow, I ruptured my Achilles tendon” and “its not fraud unless they press charges” Washington, John “I used to like taxes when Guinn was in charge” Marvel, and James “hand over your oral fluid” Settelmeyer have all taken the “taxes is a four-letter word” vow (which also happens to be the unofficial state motto) and will oppose Washoe County Schools’ tax on new and current home sales. Here’s what kills me. First, why would anyone follow Gibbons or any of his stances? And second, do people even get the concept that by improving Washoe County Schools ability to improve the education of your kids, they are, in effect, paying themselves, just a bit in the future? And people who bought homes in the North Valley’s are upset because they didn’t buy a home closer to Renown? WTF? Perhaps they should have moved closed to Renown. It is a question of fairness–how is it that Washoe County is the only county in the state that does not get this impact tax? Good grief! Well, good on you Washoe County citizens–who needs modern school buildings and more classrooms to keep out teacher/pupil ratio down? Hell, who needs public education–home school for everyone! I’m sure we’ll go far with that pack of legislators leading the way. They’ve demonstrated good decision-making abilities so far–especially that Gibbons.
- See Reno’s homeless.
- Those southern scaliwags are plotting a civil war. Can’t you hear the rebel yells? What do you want me to say? They’re the one who picked the mascot.
- Las Vegas loves Obama who found a couple of hours on his way to more California fund raising. Oh, and Hugh Jackson says “he’s all that.”
- Chris Bowers notes a steady rise in popularity for Bill Richardson among several constituencies: insiders, outsiders, netroots, Libertarians, etc. Apparently he is on his way to becoming a first tier candidate. I could certainly live with Richardson as the 2008 Democratic candidate.
- Will people ever get the point? Nancy Pelosi never REQUESTED the plane, she was told to take it by the feds. I guess the editorial board tried, but some folks (commenters) will never get it.
- Is it any surprise why he is my favorite president?

[...] SB97- At first glance I like this bill. It limits school administrator salaries to one and a half times the salary of the highest paid principal in the school district. I am all for getting the money out of the hands of the pencil pushers and the talking heads and into the hands of the people who shape our kids futures. Contrary to the belief of many liberals, we conservatives care deeply about the future of our kid’s educations. We just have the vision to see that many of our education funding problems can be solved without raising taxes. [...]

Scaliwag? Apropos if you’re referencing definition #1….
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=scaliwag
Except in this case, the whore cannot be thrown overboard, unless of course y’all want to reduce your tax revenues…
Now be a good tax-sucking leach…just bend over and get ready to take it like we did for so many years.
It disheartens me to write this comment; well not really, I’m sorta giddy about the future and what term limits will bring…insert scaliwag screeching with pleasure here.
Happy Presidents’ Day!!!
KidFromVegas needs to realize that “taking it” and “being a leach” cuts both ways.
Significantly more money “per capita” is required to build and maintain decent roads as well as to provide other essential services outside of Clark County where the population density is lower. Therefore, basic equity would seem to suggest that those more “rural folks” are entitled to somewhat greater state funding “per capita” than their citified brethren in the south just to maintain an equivalent supply of basic services.
If the southern folk don’t see it that way, then perhaps there could be a convincing legal challenge to any southern attempt to maintain its “subsidized growth rate” by seeking to “pirate water” from the rest of the state.
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/sun/2007/feb/19/566625170.html
In an “equitable world” Clark County would pay a HUGE AMOUNT to the rural counties to access rural water that will sustain and enhance its growth rate at the expense of the rural counties which are being being “victimized” by the big brother county which wants to “leach” off their water assets and expects them to just “take it”.
Have you ever driven down 395 through California between Mammoth and I-15 and seen the vast expanse of otherwise developable land that lies fallow because LA pirated most all of their water rights years ago and left them without the ability to continue to develop?
Screw Las Vegas and its insatiable thirst for water rights outside of Clark County. They should absolutely pay through the nose and subsidize the entire rest of the state if they want “take it” and “leach off” rural Nevada.
Take that Kid
I love the fact that once you’re in the minority you preach about equity…oh, and entitlements, ha. If the cow counties want more, then look to yourselves and not for a hand out from Clark. And yes, I hope we pay through the nose for water since our county commissioners (those that have not been sentenced to jail time and those that were bought and paid for by the developer) allow rapid development versus smart growth.
In the 70s and 80s, Clark could have made the same arguments as you did; and yet today we do subsidize YOU…it is so easy to bite the hand that feeds you. If the water dries up, so does your subsidy, as much as you HATE US, you need us.
And by the way, thanks for that bonehead of a Governor you gave us.
I read that EJ’s Jazz cafe closed.
I was really affected by the Homeless Picture Project. I feel for the families homeless. It was a great project, and I hope it sheds some light to our lawmakers on how to help out the homeless. Particularly unnerving was the Homeless Assistance Center blank lot with the ‘Completion January 2007′ sign, yet hte lot is still vacant and empty.
Yep, EJ’s has closed.
I didn’t mean to start a civil war in comments…..
The civil war was started long before the Minx called the Silver State home…when Governor Scrugham, also the state’s first engineer, had the audacity to proposed building the Hoover Dam down south. This cost him during his next election, as northerners didn’t want to spend any money down south.
To use such a word that is so demeaning to women is offensive. To refer to southerners with that word is a far cry from “rascals” or “sponges” and further exacerbates the divide…you didn’t think I let that one slip by, did you? So much for “one Nevada” huh?
As much as I adore you, this rebel still has some pride.
I was going for the whole civil war meaning, not the whore meaning. I didnt even know it meant that. JUst trying for a theme–you know?
I C
Geez all you guys can argue about is North Vs. South.
Anybody have any comments on the Homeless Project? To hand out 40 disposable cameras to homeless families and say ‘film your life’ and then collect the cameras back is pretty visionary.
Can anyone tell me why the school district is spending $55 million on a middle school at Damonte when they spent $24 million on middle schools in Spanish Springs?
maybe its bigger? more students? Having a quid pro quo attitude isn’t the right way to go about….there could be lots of reasons why they had to spend more.
Texex. Why don’t you go back to flinging your imaginative sleaze on the Gleaner. There you can high-five each other for the biggest load of factless crap. No wonder most people think blogs are just the refuge for partisan lunatics.
I’m not talking about quid pro quo. I’m talking about asking WCSD to explain why this one would cost $30 million more. It is supposed to house 10% more students.
I can’t speak directly to the amount of money but I can say that growth is explosive out there at the High School. It’s brimming and has many more students coming next year. Teachers sharing classrooms, etc.
How long ago ago was the MS built in Spanish Springs? I imagine inflation has something to do with it as well. That doesn’t account for all of the difference but possibly a decent chunk of it. Add in growth and technology needs….
Yeah, the camera/homeless project was pretty well done though I think I’ve read about other places that have done it before. Seems more worthwhile than the beer/fundraiser thing I heard some people were doing for our local homeless. Did anybody else catch that? Did I hear wrong?
texex, sounds like gossip.
Why don’t you call the heads of the Democratic Party down here and check it out? the number is 775 721 7530 Why don’t you call Jo Etta Brown and check it out? She’s in the book. Why don’t you call Settlemeyer himself and check it out. He’s in the book.
Go ahead - you now have the numbers to call and talk about it.
It’s true; it’s not gossip. You’re going to find out only if you check it out.
primary sources prove its not gossip. Perhaps one day I’ll have time to investigate between my two jobs….but you can always try and get the documents.
The Democratic Party, Texex? Yeah, there is an unbiased source.
Why did EJ’s fail? If you ate there or know about it, I’m collecting feedback at http://theurban.blogs.com/urbanspaceconsulting_home/2007/02/reno_ejs_closed.html and welcome yours.
OK, then try reporter Marie Johnson of the Record Courier. She knows the story.
Say, Man, are you into sheltering wife beaters or what? There was a usual criminal background check run and the records came up “sealed”. What’s Settlemeyer got to hide?
Shouldn’t all candidates have a criminal background posted to let the public know their past? Or do we want to let felons run for office? Seems like a criminal background check would be REQUIRED of any person running for office!~!
Ken, music and atmosphere great, food was just okay. Honestly, they were probably a year too early. If they could have lasted another year, they probably couldve made it.
Only in the addled world of an idiot partisan like Texex would a guy who questions some unfounded rumors be accused of being “into sheltering wife beaters.”
You keep saying ask these people, they’ll tell you. Well if they knew for sure, wouldn’t they have said something last year, you know, before November? Now you say ask some reporter. Did she write a story about it? If so, where’s the link? Or was she taken in by the great GOP conspiracy of 2006?
Keep your libelous trash to the likes of the Globe or, more locally, Cobbgobbler.net.
I think the food at EJ’s was probably 3 star on it’s best day. The music was nice, but I always felt claustrophobic in the place. The layout was all wrong for the size of the space IMHO. It was a nice effort with less than perfect execution IMHO.
I personally hope someone fills up that space quickly. It’s a GREAT location.
