To Debate Or Not To Debate: It All Depends On Who Televises It
Its been quite a week for the minx and believe it or not, it wasn’t intentional. Not only did the big blogs and Moveon.org pay me a bit of attention, but my name is now mud on Michelle Malkin’s as well. I am truly honored. I actually keep going back and forth on the whole Fox News broadcast of a Democratic debate thing–well back and forth is not the right way to describe it. I guess I am still feeling like the state party is taking the heat for something that was probably decided by, or at least arranged by someone operating above their heads. motion. But as these things usually go, they are serving as a scapegoats–taking all their lumps with grace and passion. Kudos to them. I am also feeling a little responsible because my post about the state party’s official response to the beginning controversy over the Fox News debate is what really set all of this in motion. It certainly was never my intent to embarrass the state party or any of its personnel.
But protests that work seize upon a moment or an opportunity, and the state party along with the Western Majority Project presented Moveon.org with an opportunity it couldn’t ignore, particularly since they were already set to go after Fox News as a legitimate news outlet with the release of Robert Greenwald’s short film “Fox Attacks Obama. All they had to do was tack on a sentence about the Nevada Democratic Party at the end. You can’t blame them for going for it, and you can’t blame the state party for defending the position someone probably arranged for them to take. Perhaps its because I have a background in conflict resolution, but I am always looking for a way for the two sides to compromise. However, I don’t think that’s going to happen in this case, so here is my solution. Go with the boycott and create a real stir–a major media story as Mr. Jackson has also advised (by the way, I saw what you said about me). Make it such a story that Fox becomes convinced that no one will watch. Call Olbermann, call Blitzer, call Donner and Blixen. Get them all on the case and stir the hornets nest until the debate becomes so noteworthy that some other networks would graciously offer to take the FIRST major Democratic debate of the election season off Fox’s hands. It would give the state party an out, and it would let another network embarrass the hell out of Fox. And of course, it might also serve as notice to Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch that when a group of people decides they’ve had enough, they really can change how you operate.
So Senators Reid, Salazar, and Tester and Governors Schweitzer, Richardson, Napolitano–time to get on the horn and work the media behind the scenes. Find us another network and a way out of this debate.

[...] I’m going to keep saying it. The way to prevent the Fox News debate from happening is to get the candidates to boycott it. And, for me, its less about the fact that Fox News can’t be considered a legitimate news outlet (after watching “News War,” the whole idea of what constitutes news has been called into question), its that they are an outlet for pundits who peddle hate speech. If I were a candidate, why would I want to support that? And as a state Democratic party, would I want to support that? I hope the answer is no. Fox is not hot. [...]
[...] Hmm, wasn’t that my strategy? I hope the Executive Board knows about this and makes the right decision tomorrow during the conference call. Reid stepped in it big time with this one. [...]

And let’s get all the long undone “Dirty Laundry” of the Nevada State Democratic Party cleaned up as well too!
After all, we have guests coming in to visit - and it’s just the right thing to do!
It is amazing what sobriety does for one’s opinions…if Fox was a pirate, do you know what that would make Nevada? (hint: every orifice would be filled, and we’d be thrown overboard). Sometimes, I just don’t know if I want to spank you, or lavish you with gifts and adoration, maybe we could do both…XXXOOO
Ughh…I just burped up rike a pair of Wacky Wallwalkers. Who the hell knows how rong they were in there.
The state party leadership needs a good scrubbing alright! Or maybe a dunking in the Truckee?
Good job, Myrna!
I really like the idea of a rational compromise. In terms of extremism, there really isn’t any counterpart to Fox on the left in the United States. So, with that in mind, it wouldn’t be so bad if Fox shut down for a day, and let, say, Cuban TV run the next debate using Fox’s propaganda network. Cuba might be too moderate to be a legitimate counter-part. I remember before the Iraq invasion they had a televised debate on the issues between someone who seemed very quick on the nuclear trigger and … and … wait for it … none other than Pat Buchanan, peace activist extraordinaire. The other solution is of course the Lizzie Borden solution elaborated in the classic feminist film — Born in Flames (1983). Or we could just let them have their network and not give it the stamp of legitimacy by asserting, wrongly, that they are capable of running a rational debate. The party should just ‘fess up that the Fox debate idea was idiotic.
