Reno and Beyond: The End Of The World As We Know It?
- For those wondering, I took down my post about Molly Ball, because I started to feel like it wasn’t right to return one cheap shot with another and I didn’t want the post to stay up and create controversy. Consider this a mea culpa. I thought that was a better decision than leaving the post up and doing the same.
- I just have to say it even though I’m pretty sure they can’t do anything about it. I hate the new “Today’s news update” (breaking news) window on the front page of the RGJ.com. Less information in the same space is never a good decision–I don’t care if you can scroll through it.
- I finally made it over to Electronic Espresso this weekend and its a great addition to WeFi. Its spacious, modern, and comfortable, and although I am not a coffee drinker, someone told me the mocha they had there was the best they’ve ever had–anywhere. And trust me, this mocha drinker knows of what she speaks–she’s had mochas all over the U.S. I can vouch for the tea. If you are looking for a coffee house that is a little more city than shabby chic, Electronic Espresso is your place.
- I also have to include a short shout out to M & M’s Fish and Chicken Shack on Mill Street just east of Terminal drive in the corner strip mall. I am just going to say three words to you and if you know how good these can be, you will be in heaven at M & M’s because they make it just like mama did, if she was born and raised in Louisiana: Oyster Po’ Boy. Word. I’m just glad its not across the street from me like Saigon Pearl. A once a week visit to M & M’s would surely become a HUGE problem if you know what I mean.
- And I must apologize to the folks over at the Reno News & Review because I have not been reading, not because I don’t want to, but because since I started using feeds to read all of my media, I can’t. I promise I’ll try to remember to stop by every Thursday until you get your damn feeds in order because I miss you.
- Reno’s new redevelopment director Mark Lewis has a mixed track record. He was fired from his post as city manager in Stockton, California by the city council for alleged mismanagement and his “contentious relationship with staff and the media.” Let’s hope McNeeley keeps him in line. Its been a long time since I’ve been to downtown Stockton so I can’t comment on his prospects here.
- From a press release from the State Treasurer’s office: “Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall has found more than $118,000 that belongs to numerous Nevada government agencies in the State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division.” That’s fantastic. Its great to know that Marshall’s efforts to make her office and the state government more efficient are working. But its a little funny that 28 state agencies didn’t know where some of their money was—and that Mr. Krolicki couldn’t help them find it last year. Oh, and the website address they sent out isn’t working.
- Jill Derby carries the Nevada State Democratic Party line and comes out in support of their decision to sponsor a Democratic presidential debate on Fox News in August. I guess if you want to be elected the next party chair, you have to align yourself with Harry Reid, the current chair Tom Collins, and the great and powerful state unions. I’m not surprised at all by Derby’s decision, and I actually think she will make a great state party chair. However, it is hard for me to get past the fact that Fox News regularly gives air time to pundits actively engaged in hate speech. That’s why the Washington Post’s recent portrayal of Michelle “Defense of the Japanese Internment” Malkin was doubly disturbing. Apparently, eliminationist rhetoric is just adorable
- Yippie Skippie, Rudy Giuliani is coming to Reno on March 10th. The Beacon found out how much it costs to be named to Rudy’s team for his so far unannounced candidacy. What potential donors aren’t thinking about is how trustworthy Giuliani’s team has proved itself to be in the past with money. All I want to know is how many times he’s going to quote Reagan? If he thought people in California went for that, he’ll love Reno.
- One of the fired U.S. Attorneys from New Mexico, David Iglesias, is holding a press conference tomorrow–his last day on the job. According to TPMmuckraker, Iglesias also sent an email to Joe Monohan, “a political consultant and blogger” that called his own firing a “political fragging.” Senator Diane Feinstein is asking Senate leaders Reid and McConnell to sponsor a bill co-authored by Senator Arlen Specter that would “force the administration to seek Senate confirmation of U.S. attorneys, or otherwise face having replacements appointed by a federal judge.” I sense a showdown coming. Too bad Bogden went so quietly, although if Montgomery’s claims in the Gibbons/Trepp case are true, Bodgen may have deserved to go.
- Its been a great day hasn’t it? The Shanghai stock market fell 9%, the NY Stock Exchange dropped 3.5%, and in Tokyo, where its tomorrow, the market has opened with a drop of 4%. Who should we believe? Greenspan or other economists?
- At least I can look forward to the two hour premiere of America’s Next Top Model. Tyra’s crazed self worship and aspiring model abuse is just what I need to shake me out of this recession funk.

I will give the new guy the benefit of the doubt for the Redevelopment Agency……Stockton’s redevelopment map shows some 40+ projects downtown….that’s pretty good. Course we have no idea how responsible he was for those.
Let’s hope he’s nice to the media here!
I’m “shocked, shocked” that you would suggest derby is a political invertebrate! You too easily forget the scads of experience she gained while campaigning and LOSING to the worst qualified congressional candidate this state has ever seen. I miss the logic in how making a big loser the state chair is somehow beneficial until you look into benificient offshore accounts of those in Genoa and Tahoe that support her.
But this is about politics and who you know and who has the money and the good ‘ol boy/girl system of senority ascendency. It’s not about selecting the best person for the job when our state and nation is in a time of great crises.
She will be just the opposite of the crude, arrogant, and rough Collins. She will be the party girl, er.. grammaw, the NDSP needs to raise money the feedstock of the beast of politics. But I wouldn’t look for great ideas and fresh thinking unless the consultants on Reid and Dean’s staffs provide them for her. About the best that can be hoped for is that she does less damage than Collins.
Has anybody looked into if the FBI agents that were involved in the Montgomery raids were also replaced?
Seems like if the same ones that botched that first raid on Montgomery are the same ones investigating the gibber, they have little incentive to come to the truth of the matter as it would reflect a bad past performance on thier part. If there are new FBI agents on the starTrepper case then there might be a better investigation into not only the bribery but expanding to tampering with a US Attorney.
I still maintain that Bogden is the lynchpin on sending gibber to jail not so much for bribery but for tampering with a US Attorney.
Youu will see more from Kate Marshall’s review of the Bank of Krolicki over the year.
Mike, I think he was heavily involved in Stockton’s downtown redevelopment–probably why he got the job.
You could have just said that you finally agreed with “The Man.”
And by the by, I said that Ball’s Political Notebook is written in a short and breezy style, like a blog. Not an actual blog.
And I actually meant to type “here”, not “her”, but missed the “e”.
Ha, I guess I could have. I still have a problem with the judgmental language she used–just started thinking it was beneath me to respond in kind no matter how mad her word choice made me.
Warren Trepp is a dirty thief. I used to work at the Eldorado. Rick Murdock, (sales) would order us all to kiss his stupid ass for weeks on end while he gambled and partied. I heard him laughing about the money he stole while working for Milken. He is scum.
