Reno and Beyond: The Minx Must Sleep, But First

- DMD posted the city’s plan for an extension of the whitewater park and the formation of an “eco-channel” or low flow channel that would be friendly to tubers and kayak racers, but still “pass high flood flows. I’m all for extending the whitewater park–its the best thing Reno has done for the city as far as development, tourism, and local use–but whittling the river to half its current width seems a bit extreme, especially in terms of possible flood flows. I would love to see any extension of the whitewater park incorporate the plaza at 10 N. Virginia. With the new canopy design and direct access to the water for pedestrians, that plaza could become the city center it should.
- I just found out that I was in the Ralston Flashy thing today (Nugget #2 if you must know–but who or what the hell was #1?). That’s cool and all, I think its my second mention by the real journalist, but he makes it sound like I’m trying to shut out the media, not Hatice Gecol. See for yourself:
Never let it be said I don’t give bloggers credit when it is due. Check out this interesting bit about the controversial Gibbons energy adviser unearthed by a northern blogger who calls herself Myrna the Minx. It seems she’s so angry at the Las Vegas Sun that she wants to shut out the media.
First he calls me a terrorist and now he’s accusing me of trying to shut out the media. As if. There was also something about the mysterious donors to Gibbons’ defense fund and the legalities involved because of his status as a federal official involved in a state election when the probe became public. The real question is who would contribute to a Gibbons’ defense fund at this point? Trepp and Rogich for sure if that’s legal, but who are the other 18 at 10,000 per? Ralston will reveal soon I’m sure.
- I wanted to tell Stanley that I absolutely love being called Czarina. I could hear that 100 times a day and not get tired of it. May I take your coat Czarina Minx? May I have the pleasure of massaging your feet Czarina Minx? That person has offended you? Shall I smite him Czarina Minx? Uh, of course. Duh. Oh, and Stanley may have fun with Google more often than me, but sometimes I have fun with it too.
- Matt Stoller is calling for the head of Harry Reid on multiple sites. I’d hate to be working in Reid’s office over the next few days now that the Kossacks are loose. As I have discussed previously, it appears that someone made a unilateral decision (Tom Collins/Harry Reid/Western Majority Project?) without consulting the rest of the state party leadership. Doesn’t that seem anti-democratic to you? And who has those pesky updated by-laws anyway?
- According to Paul Blumenthal’s In Broad Daylight blog, Daniel Bogden is perhaps the only U.S. Attorney involved in the recent purge who may have been fired for possible performance issues. Watch TPMmuckraker for updates tomorrow. So far today, Department of Justice official Michael Battle resigned, Citizens for Responsible and Ethics in Washington filed an ethics complaint against Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-NM) for violating Senate rules by contacting U.S. Attorney David Igelsias and pressuring him about a probe, two of the U.S. Attorneys, including Bodgen, had to be subpoenaed to appear on Capitol Hill, and quite possibly those same U.S. Attorneys may have been threatened by another Department of Justice official to keep quiet.

HI Myrna!
I think the narrowing of the Truckee would allow for rafting even in low flow conditions….and if you think about it…it’s the reason why the current water park works so well…because they funnel the Truckee into two narrow channels surrounding Wingfield Park’s island….even when the Truckee is low kayakers can kayak. I don’t think the river would be raftable from Virginia to Lake St unless it was narrowed and deepened. Plus it would handle floods just fine because they would not be narrowing the banks of the river or the the area the Truckee is in, they would stay where they are…and as high as they are…they would simply be creating a path in the existing Truckee riverbed and funneling the river through it using large boulders like they did at the whitewater park. I think its more ecologically friendly than the current setup. Have I talked you into it yet? hmm hmm? lol
Cool renditions! It would be great if it happened!
Also, thanks for following up on the Dem/Fox thang!
I still ponder the Rory Reid/Hillary Clinton/Harry Reid connection to Fox and the fact that Barack won’t show up with Fox and they have pounded him and so has Hillary. Still pondering.
What an embarassing situation for Nevada Dems …giving credibility to Fox as a legitimate political news source.
Bylaws?…We don’t need no stinking bylaws…
There is a Washoe County Democratic Meeting tonight at 6PM at the County HQ on Terminal Way.
If you have concerns about the Fox News debate or other issues in the Democratic Party you should go to the meeting and let your voice be heard

I like the new rendering with less cables a lot more than the old one… maybe they can tweak this thing into something worthwhile!
I totally agree with DTM Dude about the river
as long as it doesn’t blow over from a major Sierra gale.
The new rendering sucks. It looks cheap to me, but I’m not sure why I’m suprised. Reno doesn’t get much right.
Justin-
What could you not like about a cheap looking piece of steel with no vision, point or creativity?
Oh no.. so much for trying to be more positive.
It’s kind of funny that it looks like they spent more time working on how the top will look when no one will really ever see the top. The underside of the thing is pretty wretched though, eh?
Also, it just dawned on me what the new canopy surface looks like… an Oxy cleaning pad, nice.
Also, as unfortunately the Downtown Makeover site has no where to post, I just thought I’d throw this one out there for y’all…
Arterra ain’t getting built
Now of course it doesn’t take a genius to figure that one out… but I thought I’d say it now so in six months I can be “quoted” again on the front of this site and DTM when the project is officially dead.
Thanks!
I don’t have any “real” issues w/ the overall shape of the canopy. It’s the overall details such as the corrugated top that looks cheesy to me. Also, if they intend on making the roof fiberglass, it will never work. We get 300 days of sunlight as well as fairly large temperature fluxuations. I give it 5 years max until it’s discolored and cracking.
Has the city learned nothing from the discolored artwork tiles at the Airport or the wind artwork sculpture outside the Reno/Sparks Convention Center? Build it right, or don’t waste the money! The initial canopy that was approved looked substantial and more graceful, with flowing curves and arches. It also “looked” like something that might actually stand up to our weather and stick around for a few decades. In comparison, this one looks like it was purchased at Ikea. (I kid, I kid).
Sara Lee,
What are you basing this on? From everything I’ve heard/read, Arterra seems like one of the more likely projects to make it past the planning/approval stages.
I realize I myself have been critical (i.e. disappointed) of downtown planning/development, but you seem to never have anything positive to say. I also find it quite funny that you accuse Mike of making up stuff on his website and not listing sources, when you could easily be accused of doing just the same.
Hi people! First, let’s remember that those images are from the staff report links pdf for March 7’s meeting. That was not the only design option in the pdf, there were two. http://www.downtownmakeover.com/downtown_reno/images/10_North_Virginia/cover-pillars2-lg.jpg this was the other one. I have seen so many different renderings now (the Making It Great sign on the property has a completely different rendering than the others) it will be hard to tell which one they ultimately build. I think 6 different renderings in all? I am not sure about the 4-pillar idea since I think they only poured footers for two when they built the plaza?
I am not sure what Sara Lee is basing the Arterra on…but there has been a lot of negative press about the high prices of the units, and I believe their first ‘reservation event’ was held at the end of February, perhaps only 2 people showed up or something LOL. Most people I know that inquired about the project were flabergasted at the pricing.
And thanks for being somehwat positive Justin……Sara Lee never accused me of making stuff up, she accused me of listening to unreliable sources…two VERY different things…in any case I consider my site very accurate and reliable, especially since her post I refrained from posting just any info people give me unless I can find a second source to back it up, or I get it from official city documents which is where 95% of my info comes from anyway.
Oh and I’m working on places to post for each project….but as Justin said, if you are gonna build it, build it right!
Hi Myrna!
Let’s extend the waterpark to Pyramid with a “no new commercial or residential building within 1/4 mile of the river” stipulation on any 1/4 mile section conserved. Only redevelopment and open space along the river.
That is a fabulous idea.
First, let me just apologize to Sara Lee if I unfairly criticized her.
Back to the canopy, I think the alternate proposed rendering that Mike provided a link to looks 100x better than the one pictured above. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope for the best at todays meeting.
Yo Sara!!! Who buyin da Fitz? Willit still be casino or sumpin else
And, whazup with Plaza del Sesso?
