What Am I? Chopped Liver? Well Maybe But…
I want to try and clear up what I think are two misconceptions (or perhaps deliberate misunderstandings) I run into today.
- mirrors some of what I’ve heard from the state party leadership on this issue:
Now, speaking more to other blogs where I’ve read about this issue, rather than just the readers of this one: The pure hatred I’ve seen directed at Fox and their viewers by fellow Democrats and liberals sickens me. I am saddened that some of us would actually make binding and dismissive judgments of so many people based solely on what t.v. channel they watch. The greatest asset I believe the Democratic party and the liberal-minded members of our society have is our compassion for others and our willingness to embrace everyone and occasionally give up a little of our own self-interest and comfort to make sure that people are not left behind in education, that others do not go hungry without someone at least trying to help, and that people are not judged based on their race, gender, occupation or thoughts (hint, hint).
I think CLS and the state party leadership are missing a very important distinction–criticizing Fox News’ self-proclaimed status as a legitimate news outlet is not the same thing as criticizing anyone who happens to watch a TV show broadcast on any Fox channel. Hell, I’ve watched 24 before. And I’m not sure where CLS is seeing all the hatred and intolerance (DailyKos’ commenters maybe?), but I think its going a bit far to say that a grassroots movement to point out that Fox News is not a legitimate news outlet is keeping the Democratic Party from helping the poor or fighting intolerance. I also don’t think its helpful or useful to insult people who watch Fox News, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t express my opinion on the subject. I believe the greatest asset the Democratic Party has is its commitment to intelligent and open debate, whether that debate is about our own party policies and communication or the tendency of Fox News to present a biased news product. Nevada Democrats should be happy that we have an opportunity to galvanize the rank and file in a real exercise of democratic action. This is not about self-interest, its about fighting for the kind of Democratic Party we want. And while my ideas about what that party looks like may be different than someone else’s, it doesn’t mean I should stop.
- Tom Collins has been quoted in interviews in which he concludes that this is not a local or state movement. What am I? Chopped liver? How about the members of the Carson City Central Committee? Mike Zahara? Chopped liver as well? And all the other Executive Board members and County Chairs who did not sign the ()?
What does all this mean? It means we are having a healthy debate about the way our state party functions. We are like the typical dysfunctional family. You usually don’t want to fight it out in public, but you aren’t fooling anyone by keeping it behind closed doors. The neighbors always find out. I know that Tom Collins and the party leadership are stuck between a rock and a hard place , and I sympathize with them–really I do. But that doesn’t mean the right decision has been made, and it doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it.
And according to Hugh Jackson, it looks like I might owe Harry Reid an apology. or the meant to placate protesters sent out by Tom Collins.
So now that Edwards is out and Reid has distanced himself from the Fox News debate, will it still happen? Certainly not if more candidates decide to not to schedule it in.

Myrna, have you been reading the comments here and on Gleaner? They have been hijacked by at least THREE certifiable nutjobs who spew nothing but hatred toward Fox. They are not questioning its validity. They are calling for the heads of the people who had anything to do with this deal. And while it’s only three people, the entire discussion is tainted because you are tacitly endorsing that shit by not even asking them to tone it down. That’s where I think CLS is coming from. This site and Gleaner are now the home to people who will stop at nothing to get their way and it goes against what you’re trying to sell in this post.
I only delete for too much obscenity or possible libel. I can’t believe you are in favor of deleting comments but not posts? That doesn’t make any sense. Remember, you said its all about the conversation.
Funny you should mention deleting comments and the need for “open debate” when you are only too willing to censor and ban someone who dares to say something not in complete agreement with you. So much for open discourse and all that stuff you pay lip service to.
But don’t worry, you have the great JLA and texex over on the Gleaner backing you up 100%. I know it’s got to feel great having those guys on point for you. Talk about a great image booster.
“Mr. Johnson” you don’t know any of us! You’re just another loud mouth that just disagrees – get over it!
Check out my bio – I’m a legitimate Veterans Advocate, Activist and Columnist…so, I either enter the debate with facts and a logical argument, or exercise your right to remain silent and grow up!
These are serious topics of the times and your childish sniping is just making you look like an idiot!
BTW: There are lots and lots of people supporting our position, literally hundreds have been calling and e-mailing in support, so let’s stick to the facts shall we?
And now, let the real fun begin…
“Target ’2008′!”
“Loud mouth” from someone who is using !!! for all his sentences. Wouldn’t that be considered ironic?
But you are right. After all an esteemed columnist like yourself would never, ever make an illogical argument. Like, for example, your most recent one of “these are serious topics of the times” and I should stop my “childish sniping” You’re absolutely right Mr. Activist/Columnist, what was I thinking. Here I was under the mistaken impression the war, budget deficits, ethics, etc. was the pressing issues of our times. But, you’re right, nothing is as important as this moment in history where a party must make the ultimate choice – whether to have FOX televise a debate. This one will go down in the history books.
p.s. Wasn’t this blog actually relevant at one point? Maybe not.
I won’t engage anymore. I can’t help it if my software doesn’t let you post for some reason under “The Man” Perhaps you tried to post too many links or something? I have no idea. I am not a programmer and cannot fix whatever the problem is. As I have mentioned, you are not the only one who has problems with comments on this blog–I cant fix those either. So believe that I banned your ass if you like, if it makes you feel better, but know that people have said far worse things and I have never banned them or deleted their comments. Jerz is the perfect example of that. He’s always busting my chops about something almost every damn day.
Commenters always speak for themselves, not me.
Oh, and if this blog isn’t relevant, why are you bothering to comment?
Interesting that everything seems to be about censorship. Dems want to censor Fox cause…. why again? They’re willing to sponsor a debate, and because someone wants to censor them out there will be no meaningful debate. Even if your feel is TOTALLY “r”, they got their way didn’t they? Good for the “d”s. And this drivel about who can censor what on their own site? jerz, run yours the way you want, myrna, run yours the way you want. Welcome to America.
…even if you feel FOX is totally “r”…. (It sure is embarrassing to rant and have a huge mistake in the middle)
not censor, legitimize
Myrna, let me make myself clear. If you had ONE TIME come into the comments and said something to the effect of “JLA and texex and NVMojo are really quite crazy” I wouldn’t be saying you’re legitimizing them. Instead, you argue with myself and “Mr. Johnson” like we’re the ones hurting the site. While I think those three are entertaining because they are taking this place down, I also have an interest in this site remaining a place where real discussion about Reno and Nevada can happen. I have never said they should be banned. I think banning people you disagree with or find crazy is wrong. But checking them, by saying something to them, is different. I’ve done it myself when someone tried to lower the level of discourse. They might then scream about censorship, but when you go against the requests/wishes of a site’s owner, people start to tire of you. I know this because of all the comments I get directed at me on this site from your loyal fan base.
It may not bother them, as it doesn’t bother me, but the law will be laid down and life can proceed as normal. Obviously it’s your call. I don’t pretend to have control over you or your site. I just offer advice and did so until the past few days on my own site – which would never have been read by a lot of the same people who complain about me without this site right here.
It’s also okay for you to not care. Just say so. It’s also okay for you to feel the same way as those guys. just say so. That would end the problem right there. You’re either fine with the fighting (and happy to fight with myself and Johnson) or afraid to admit you side with crazy people. These are people who will post something and respond to themselves and then respond to themselves again.
It’s irresponsible on my part to NOT say something about their craziness. Unless you were to ban me, I’ll be here interjecting my commentary until normalcy returns. Or takes over, however you wish it to be.
I am arguin with mr johnson and you because you are accusing me of doing something I DID NOT DO. That’s the difference and its a very clear one.
JLA and texex and whoever else are responsible for what they say. Its about the conversation and the community. You may not like it, I may and often don’t like it, but that’s the way it is.
Jerz, you are the SELF appointed blog police, so your sense of responsibility is also self-assigned.
I have never banned you or edited your comments have I? No. You are conflating two completing different arguments.
I’m just saying that it reflects on you. That’s all. And why care so damn much if I think people should act a certain way? You’re still spending way too much time on me and not enough on the people ruining this place, but hey, you are getting tons of attention.
not censor, legitimize. And so, if you’re told you cannot attend a press conference, are you going to say, “They must not think I’m legitimate.” and go home or are you going to scream “Censorship!”???
“mrjerz” maybe your the one that needs psychiatric help – the comments of others absolutely do NOT reflect on Myrna or her site!
And who are you to judge anyone, especially the site owner, by saying “You’re spending way too much time on me and not enough on the people RUINING this place…” – it’s all about a site getting lots of attention, especially from the time a site goes up until it gets “legs” and a “national stature” (and that only happens after successfully competing with thousands of other sites) – GEEEZE!
Do you have any medical or psychiatric training? Well, maybe you should explore that opportunity!
I just wished they’d canel the thing. It is going to be cancelled come-what-may. The powers that be should do it now and end all of our suffering over this. Time to leave the anguish behind and get on with some freakin’ ISSUES.
What a bunch of cry babies!
Myrna’s bleeped my posts off several times. bfd.
It’s her call; her blog; her rules; and her discretion. She’s said that profanity and libel will get you bleeped. Other than that you can discuss whatever is on your mind.
If things get too rough here then you should stay away or go to some warm and fuzzy blog.
Texex, she deleted your comments? Or are you using “bleeped” in two different ways in the same comment?
It’s funny how hard up some people to steal the show and fillabuster the actual topic by drawing attention to their enormous egos.
Back to the topic which is Faux news and the apparent “hatred” for it and the people who lap it up like puppies at a milk bowl.
There is something about those who drink “Fox” kool-aid that is so repetitive.
I meet perfectly intelligent human beings weekly who feel it is imperitive for them to “inform” me of the evil that is Barack Obama. I see the same rabid look in each of their eyes as they excitedly start laying out the “facts” about the man.
“Do you know he is a closet Muslim which means he has terrorist ties?”
“How can we elect a man to the presidency whose middle name is Hussein (or Mohammed or whatever muslim-sounding name they thought they’d heard)?”
“Do you know Obama attended a muslim school and he only recently converted to Christianity to cover it up?”
I hear these same stupid statements, over and over again and I’ve started talking back. Every time I state the truth, I am met with the same shocked stare.
I have a German name and my skin is light (or white, call it whatever you want). My favorite response to the combo statements about Barack related to his supposed muslim faith and his muslim middle name is “Oh, so because my parents stuck me with a German name and I am half German, things I had no control over when I was born and when I was growing up, does that make me a Nazi in your eyes?”
“Or is it that I am white and you are a racist that you focus on the things about Obama that he had no control over when he was born and was being raised by his parents?”
The look that I get, over and over, from the Fox-indoctrinated, is 100% priceless and the stammering is unforgettably delicious.
And then I add, “tell me why I shouldn’t vote for him based on his policies when you know them and not on behaving like a 5th grader on the playground of the GOP.”
So, if Blue Lyon sees hatred here, he/she needs to take a closer look at whose heart the hatred is spewing out of and overflowing.
Jerz, I took one of texex’s comments off that alleged a current legislator of domestic abuse. Don’t you have anything else to do than hang out here and look for what you think I do wrong?
Hey, he said it. Myrna, if you’re removing posts, it ought to be out there. If he laifd a bunch of bullshit down and you removed that, that’s fine. But when you do it and it’s not in the open, like an edit, then you are only asking for questions. If you have no problem answering them, then don’t act like I’m being a jerk. Just cop to it.
I have absolutely no problem coping to it. When I do that, I leave another comment indicating that I deleting one.
Now can you spend more time policing your own blog?
Myrna IF someone posts something derogatory that is NOT supported by facts (and already elsewhere in the public domain) then, there could be a libel risk – and you have every right (and the responsibility) to not post it or take it down!
Example: I’ve been saying some pretty negative things about Tom Collins and Liz Foley – BUT, they are facts, already in the public domain, and I’ve taken full responsibility for my words and made it very clear that no one else is responsible for my content!
That’s what a responsible writer does. They make sure they have their facts straight and get the necessary level of corroberation and write very carefully and cautiously with a responsible sense of legal impact on everyone else involved!
As I told Taylor Marsh when she got attacked about a month ago – “I’ll stand by what I said, and next to her (or you) in any court of law and defend my rights, your rights and everyone’s rights to freedom of expression – even if I have to scream “NOT GUILTY!”
None of us should be intimidated by these bullies – that’s all they got – they are just common bullies!
