Gifts? Donations? Does It Matter?
It looks like no one knows how to categorize the money donated/contributed to Governor Gibbons’ legal defense fund–including Gibbons and his staff/lawyers, and just like Gibbons allegedly thought that night in the parking garage to Mazzeo, Secretary of State Miller is not letting this one go. From Miller’s second letter on Vegas Pundit’s site:
On March 7, 2007, my office sent you a letter requesting clarification of the information contained in your March 6, 2007 Amended Financial Disclosure Statement. On March 9, 2007, my office received a response letter from a law firm claiming to be your legal representative. While I appreciate the timely response sent on your behalf, it failed to substantively address the issues set forth in my inquiry.
Your legal representatives raised questions regarding my characterization of funds received by the Gibbons Legal Defense fund as “gifts”. Please be advised that this
interpretation was based, in part, upon your categorization in the Amended Financial
Disclosure.
Uh oh, essentially what Miller is saying is “You dope, your own people told me they were gifts in their response to my first letter. What exactly are you trying to pull here?”
And then this:
Your Amended Financial Disclosure reports that at least $169,100 in gifts were collected on behalf of the Gibbons Legal Defense Fund. Please provide the information requested in my previous correspondence, including the dates that these monetary gifts were collected, to whom or what entity these gifts were made payable, and verification that these gifts are separate and distinct from any campaign contributions you have received.
Additionally, the information provided by your legal representatives indicates that a trust
account was created on November 7, 2006 and that the reported gifts were received in 2006. Therefore, these gifts were subject to the disclosure requirements of your January 2007 filing. Accordingly, please explain why these gifts were not reported until March 6, 2007.
Miller wonders aloud while dictating this letter: “You had the nerve to not only collect almost $170,000 in “gifts” for your defense fund, you also established a trust this year from money that came in last year. I wonder how many of those “gifts” are from your list of campaign contributors?”
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter. As always, please notify my office should you need further clarification. Respectfully,
This what Miller was really saying before translating his thoughts into more appropriate bureaucratic speech: “Get it together dude because this is embarrassing, kind of fun too, but still embarrassing. Do you think you and your team can handle this (second) request? Gleefully,”
And so the saga of Gibbons’ plan to embarrass Nevada continues. He is the worst governor in American after all. Perhaps he is trying to worst governor in history? Its looking good.
