Reno and Beyond: Where’s My Prize?

- This kind of rhetoric makes me seethe. The reasons late term abortions are performed are; the fetus is dead, the fetus is alive, but continued pregnancy would place the woman’s life in severe danger, the fetus is alive, but continued pregnancy would grievously damage the woman’s health and/or disable her, or the fetus is so malformed that it can never gain consciousness and will die shortly after birth. No woman wakes up and decides to have an abortion during her third trimester–there are serious medical issues that exist in these case that doctors control. Help me understand what this woman would want done in a situation in which the fetus develops a severe case of hydrocephalus in the womb–the head swells up to 20 inches with 2 pounds of cerebrospinal fluid. Such a newborn would not survive long outside the womb and there are only a few options—a late term abortion (D&X) or a type of caesarian section. The former kills a fetus before birth; the latter allows the newborn to die after birth, on its own. Or you could allow the woman to continue in labor with a severely hydrocephalic fetus even though an attempted vaginal delivery would kill both her and the fetus. I suppose our letter writer likes the caesarian option best because its better to open up the uterus and pull the baby out to die on its own. Or perhaps, she would prefer the third method in which both the mother and fetus die during childbirth? Is that the most moral and ethical thing to do?
- Wait? Which party supports the troops when it really counts? What better way to support the troops than by giving them bigger raises and increased benefits for their survivors. The Bush Administration has said that it “strongly opposes” an additional 0.5% increase in troops’ pay, an additional $40 per month for widows of slain soldiers, additional benefits for surviving family members of civilian employees, and price controls for prescription drugs under TRICARE (the military’s health care plan for military personnel and their dependents), increases the Democrats favor. Rahm Emanuel tells it like it is:
“We ask our troops to risk their lives for our nation,” said Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel. “We ask their spouses to raise families and make ends meet without them as they serve. The President is a lot of talk when it comes to supporting the troops and their families. It’s easy to say you support our troops, but actions matter and when it comes to the treatment of our troops and their families, our resources must match our rhetoric.”

- Okay, now that’s a Happy Meal mom and dad!

My Reno doctor just told me about an 11 y/o who is 6 months pregnant in the Washoe County School Dist. Poss. father is her 13 y/o boyfriend…..or Moms boyfriend. They live in a hotel. It’s situations like these that make me support choice, since someone else obviously didn’t have one.
That’s a fabulous rebuttal, Minx. Why not copy and send it to the RGJ letters-to-the-editor page? It irks me no end to see such ignorance go unchallenged in print.
I was just recently listening to the book, Freakanomics on my iPod, which is about correlating data in different ways to uncover truths about society and public policy. One of the accounts that especially resonated with me was in regards to crime and murder rates. Politicians for the longest time kept citing various reasons for why it was going down, but all of them were wrong. The research shows that the declining crime and murder rates were directly related to the passing of abortion rights.
As a young, naive, man in college I was, initially, opposed to abortion except in cases of the rape, incest, or the health of the mother…
…but, I’m now convinced that men, and the laws some men (and women) would like to make, should have zero say in the matter – every woman has the right to choice and that right must be protected!
How did I become fully enlightened?
I listened to women, I read the facts and stats, and learned what women had to say about the reality of being pregnant – that’s how!
Two of my past lovers have had abortions. In both cases the pregnacies were accidental. They didn’t want to become pregnant and they did not want to have an abortion – but, that was the only intelligent choice, given their financial circumstances at the time and their academic goals.
In fact, I’ve never known, nor heard of anyone that WANTS to have an abortion? In all cases, it’s a sad reality that they wished they could have avoided entirely!
Men need to shut the hell up about this divisive issue!
Women who don’t want to have abortions won’t – and they, too should shut up about other women’s right to choose!
You know I hear all these people say they’re “pro-adoption” but, yet, they don’t have any adopted children? The hypocrisy is unbelievable!
whoa – great post re late term abortion/choice. People don’t want to GET IT! In the ’60’s had a friend whose baby was born after the father/husband died of testicular cancer…extremely malformed – lots of problems – Dr. just looked the other way and let it die. It was a very heartfelt act and strong character on the part of the Dr. – who happened to be practicing in a conservative Utah college town…what a risk! The knowledge/choice was not there in those days…the Pres. has not learned ANYTHING from history!

The conservatives need to stop encouraging sex, discouraging contraception and trying to outlaw abortion.
The rest of us need to figure out how to decrease the incidence of that “sad reality” Mr. Abbinett mentioned with facilitations instead of prohibitions.

ps they need to stop other things too, but I like to be concise.
