Reno Obama Mania
Well looky who’s coming to town–the man Rush Limbaugh has labled the magic negro–Barack Obama. After visiting New Hampshire and Iowa bazillions of times, and Las Vegas twice, Obama is finally going to share some of his magic with Reno. Is the unnannouced location a strategy or was the trip planned so quickly that his campaign couldn’t find a venue right away? I suppose it doesn’t matter, but if the secret location is part of a plan to encourage Beatles-like hysteria, the–what I like to call the “Fat Tire” strategy–it could work. [For those of you unfamiliar with the boring amber ale, it became popular by being "unavailable" in many locations. Its a great marketing ploy for building a steadily growing demand. Its not a terrible beer, but it was never worth crossing state lines for (kayakers--I am talking to you.)]

FYI: Here’s the original “Magic Negro” editorial by David Ehrenstein of the L.A. Times. Its a familiar cultural trope with a long history in America. It would be one thing if Limbaugh actually understood the original idea, but alas, Limbaugh is Limbaugh. By the way, Barack is about the coolest name ever. Since I read Leon Uris’ novel Exodus, I knew that it meant “flash of lightning” in Hebrew. The fact that it also means “blessing” in Swahili, Yiddish, and Arabic (depending on the spelling) makes it sound much more prophetic doesn’t it?

actual permit. I think the advance team was here initially this past weekend. (And, presumably the secret service.)
The “no sweat” way to get a ticket is just to fill out the form at the relevant links and you will instantly get an “e-ticket” for this event.
