Reno and Beyond: Big Brother Wants You To Be Quiet
- The minx got an email from someone working on the city’s plan to build a year round market in downtown and as DMD notes, the city council approved the idea last week. I hope they follow my advice and try for something like Eastern Market in D.C. Eastern Market is a popular neighborhood destination with a weekend flea market, an outdoor farmers’ market, as well as a permanent indoor market with stalls selling fresh meat, cheese, and baked goods. It also has a gallery and is a great place to get some breakfast or nummy crab cakes. A very exciting development.
- It looks like the Holland Project has run into their own Mr. Wilson, uh, I mean Mr. Moore and become another potential casualty in Reno’s war against downtown noise, despite the fact that it has significant community support and is definitely NOT a party house. Since I don’t live near their venue, I have no idea what the neighbor’s side of the story is but the project’s new permit will be discussed during the June 13th city council meeting. In typical Nevada logic, Mr. Moore uses the idea of “Big Brother” to defend his desire to shut down the project. Uh, duh. At least The Holland Project isn’t open 24 hours dude.
- Sisters are doing it for Nevada. I’ve haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick, but I have met Assemblywoman Debbie Smith and she is one of the nicest people I’ve met–plus she has the best hair ever. Anyway, perhaps the legislature should just turn everything over to their female members and go home? They certainly haven’t managed to accomplish much of significance anyway. The governor certainly isn’t helping.
- Scandalmonger photoshopped Gibbons as Otto Van Bismarck (I think)Napoleon AND Czar Nicholas. Its a gift.
- I know you’re a Mormon Harry, so you can’t drink all the tea you’ll be getting. Please feel free to send any herbal tea bags my way. I’m trying to kick my soda habit. I know the job of the legislature is to compromise, but, you know, jesus–its time to stop being afraid of looking soft on “defense” and the “war on terror.” You’re a boxer for christ’s sake, you should recognize a right hook to the jaw of your own U.S. citizens.
- Yeah, and it tastes like two bucks too.
- I’m going to say just one thing about Memorial Day. I spent this weekend with some promising young Army lieutenants who discussed the disconcerting lack of captains in the Army thanks to unexpected early retirement and casulties. The good news? The outlook for lieutenants seeking promotion is very good right now. The bad news? Many of them are going to make the same decisions their captains did. Oh yeah, and bring the troops home–do it strategically but bring them home.
- I am reading a remarkable book on neuroplasticity and Buddhism by Sharon Begley called Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain. I know, it sounds like a self-help book but its far from it. What I find most intriguing is how much the Dalai Lama encourages scientific research and the integration Buddhism and scientific thought. This book would be fun to talk about with Sarah R. Carter. Too bad so many of America’s religious leaders aren’t half as courageous as the DL. And boy is the subject of neuroscience ever topical. Imagine if we began training children to meditate in school in order to build their ability to be empathetic or compassionate, particularly those with a damaged ventromedial prefrontal cortexs? Thanks for the gift M.

I heard a Science Friday about that book and it was really interesting. The author talks about meeting the Dalai Lama…
Sad that Mr. Grumpypants has it in for the all-ages scene, but pulling for Holland’s ability to keep having shows. It’s my understanding their policy is to be done by 10 pm — not exactly a nuisance by most standards. Until they can raise the money for proper soundproofing, here’s hopin’ they can turn it down and keep rockin
Soory to hear about your chat with the young military officers. Memorial Day turned out to be a challenge for me this year. Shared some thoughts on the NevadaDem blog that might be of interest.

Good editorial in Saturday’s L.A. Times about Teaching to the TEST/NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND…’twould be an ideal world if we could teach to the Dali Lama…science, meditation, spirituality, encourage thought….whoa….perhaps we would be kind to each other as well.
I just moved to DC, up North Carolina from Eastern Market. It’s quite a nifty place with several interesting eateries. The market itself, however, is out of use because of a fire and Del. Norton is having a hard time getting money to rebuild it.
Love the downtown market idea…that’s a place to drop in on in cities/towns that have them…love the ones in Vancouver…especially Granville Island…even Bellingham, Wa. has their own year round market…people gather - it will bring in the pedestrians of a variety of calibers…yeah - hope it flies! And where would the sites be?
