A Modest Proposal To Elevate The Nevada Caucus
Is it only me, or is the national media’s tendency to ignore the Nevada caucus altogether starting to bother you too? I guess I’m finally thinking of myself as a Nevadan because its really starting to bug me. So, I propose a plan. The only way for the Nevada caucus to make its reputation is to produce an unusual result–a result that will force the media and the candidates to respect our caucus now and in the future. How do Nevada caucus voters do this? By voting for the candidate who places finished highest in the New Hampshire primary and is NOT Hillary Clinton.
Now that Nevada’s caucus follows Iowa’s and the primaries in New Hampshire and Michigan, our fourth place in the election season needs to become the turning point for national elections, and this can best be accomplished by forcing pundits and voters to question the front runner status of Hillary Clinton. Clinton leads and probably will continue to lead the other Democratic candidates by a large margin in the national polls through the Iowa, New Hampshire, and Michigan primaries. So Nevada needs to be part of the national shake-up just before the primary in South Carolina.
As it looks now, the Iowa caucus is still a toss up, and even if Clinton doesn’t win in Iowa, the vote is liable to be close with Clinton maintaining her front runner status in the national polls. Next up will be New Hampshire and Michigan, which now look to be easy wins for Clinton, unless her campaign makes a huge mistake, something that doesn’t appear to likely after observing them for months. So by voting for the non-Hillary candidate who finishes second in New Hampshire (who I’m guessing will be Obama), Nevadans will not only surprise pundits and pollsters who have predicted an easy Clinton victory here, they may actually help another candidate get a huge boost going into the South Carolina primary and loosen up the 2008 Democratic nomination process.
Look, why not vote for what’s better for the state caucus rather than what’s better for a certain candidate? I know, I sound cynical, or at least mercenary, but really, will such a strategy damage the process or help those of you holding out for an Edwards or (god help us) a Richardson win? I really like Edwards, but I just don’t think he can win the general election for reasons I’ve state many times before. So its between Obama and Clinton, and either one would do a much better job that the shrub we have in office now.
So instead of endorsing a candidate, I am endorsing the Nevada caucus. Vote for the candidate that comes in second place in New Hampshire who is NOT Hillary Clinton and put the Nevada caucus on the election map. Its for the good of the country! No offense Iowa and New Hampshire, but too many old and/or white people vote in your caucuses.
And if you believe any of this crap about Clinton in the west will have an actual effect on the election (I’m skeptical), then what I am proposing is an even smarter move.
This is one to share don’t you think? Use the chicklets below to digg, reddit, sphere, whatever your preference is.

I admire your creative attempt to inject relevance back into the Nevada Caucus. But, I don’t think we would be able to get everyone on the same page (to vote for Obama, the likely person to be chosen under your plan).
I’m not sure I want to be part of this process at all.
I’ve been working hard. Trying to get volunteers to help with the caucus in my section of the District. My briefing flyer (and all the newsletters we have been distributing over the past months) say we are second in the nation, have a significant voice, etc.
I stayed in Reno to participate in a meaningful event.
I think now I will be leaving in a couple of months.
Myrna, you ignorant slut, we’ll miss you!
Where’s Myrna going?????
Or, are you confusing my possible departure with
her?
Good idea Myrna, but I’m hoping your wrong on Edwards being able to win the General – in fact, I’m of the mind he has a better chance of winning the General than any other Democrat!
I’m caucusing for Edwards and standing my ground in full support of Edwards – that’s how we win the NV Caucus for someone other than HRC!
Johnathan, don’t forget to identify your second choice in case Edwards doesn’t reach viability threshold in your precinct.
BTW, the Clinton, Richardson, Edwards and Obama campaigns have been doing “idenitification” canvassing.
You can contact your Edwards campaign HQ and find out those who are fellow Edwards supporters in your precinct.
My prediction (and this is not a psychic one, btw):
Obama: 55%
Clinton: 25%
Biden: 10%
Edwards: 5%
Richardson: 5%
Each precinct gets allotted a certain number of delegates
(for the county convention in February), based on the number of Democrats registered in the precinct. That number determines the percentage each candidate must get in each precinct in order to be “viable”. If your candidate isn’t viable, then you will have a 15 minute opportunity to realign with one that is. Then a final count is done and math figured out to see how many delegates each candidate gets for that precinct.
It still profoundly bothers me that we will be going third.
Now, after NH (and on the 12th). We were told we would
be second in the nation. Since they won’t be sandwiching us between Iowa and NH with the new schedule, the only way to rectify this wrong is to schedule us FIRST.
It is still my opinion that if Iowa and NH go with one candidate,
the nation will be napping when we caucus.
I say that instead of promoting Obama (which, as you see, won’t work with at least one Edwards supporter, lol), let’s push Harry Reid into scheduling us for a caucus on the Saturday following Thanksgiving!!!!
Reid is the Majority Leader. Let’s ask him to be a LBJ-like Majority Leader! (For a day.)
I’m promoting a different idea (than Myrna’s): holding the
Caucus on November 24th.
