Heck of A Job Hatice

Because it looks like Hatice Gecol is chivalrously stepping up to take the heat for hiring Joe Enge as her deputy. The one aspect in all of this that hasn’t been explored is Enge’s recent history of criticizing government waste and how his new job working as a well-paid state employee might affect his consulting and policy efforts. Enge has a right to have a job, but the citizens of Nevada have a right to wonder why someone like Enge would deign to join the state payroll one again, as concerned as he is about government waste and all. Its an interesting stance to take to say the least. If nothing else, its a lesson to all you kids out there about how rewarding it can be to ingratiate yourself with the right people. I wonder if Enge’s salary is included on Bob Beers’ Nevada State Spend-O-Meter? Somehow I doubt it.
One thing’s for sure, I’ve stopped worrying about being qualified to be Reno’s mayor.

Geez, ever since I moved here, the more I hear about the bozos that get elected and appointed in the state, the more I can’t wait to vote them out of office.

Well, Enge is a contibuting editor to Liberty Media LLC’s “Liberty Watch” magazine and Liberty Media LLC is listed on Bob Beers Annual Financial Disclosure form as a business entity that he owns, directs or is a trustee or owns > 1% stock. Do we have a match?

Enge on October 23, 2007 made the Carson School Board sit thru a long powerpoint presentation on technical schools…who prepared the powerpoint presentation? Nevada Policy research Institute! Thank goodness he doesn’t work at Kentucky Fried Chicken and the discussion was the young-uns lunch menu.

I’m waiting to hear the wail from the right wingers about Enge being on the government payroll and serving as an elected offical at the same time. Right?

Today’s (11.27.07), SUN article (Cooligan/”from the suns blog”) reports that;
“Office of Energy Director Hatice Gecol said the hiring freeze didn’t apply to Enge because the offer was made by the state and Enge accepted before the moratorium was put in place.”

REALLY? Enge was hired November 12, 2007. Yet, the newly created “Justification to Fill” form (see budget.state.nv.us), is dated November 8, 2007. Gibbons’ October 22, 2007 Press Release “ask[s] for state agencies to prepare for a hiring freeze.” So it appears Enge was hired AFTER the hiring freeze. Please release the COMPLETED “Justification to Fill” form for Joe Enge to the press.

The article also reports that Gecol said
“I believe he will make a good manager and I am excited to have him onboard.”

REALLY?! According to the Nevada Legislative Council Bureau, Budget Account Detail, page 61, budget account 101-4868, there are 5 employees aside from the Gecol and Enge!! There is the Associate Engineer; the Accountant and three (3) Grant/Project Analysts. Five employees is well within the recognized “span of control” of any one supervisor (Gecol herself would suffice as the department’s lone supervisor; as it is, there are two superviors for 7 total positions, and the Executive Budget 2007 recommends only 5 employees!; one position, administrative assistant is vacant per the Energy Office website).

Clearly this is not management efficiency, and it sure as heck falls WAY short of the Governor’s October 22, 2007 declaration that,
“Just as families and businesses are tightening their belts, government needs to do the same.”

So, what’s the real deal, Stan?

According to the budget, Enge’s salary is $63,648 (plus benefits) and then goes up in 2008 to $70,825. Not bad for a guy without credentials whose Department exists “Implement the Governor’s Nevada Energy Protection Plan by seeking to ensure a reliable and affordable energy supply for Nevada.” Then again, maybe his work with the Nevada Policy Research Institute has given him a strong background in HOT AIR.

Hey Kids!, hiring freeze went into effect October 18, 2007! That’s a full month before Enge was hired! Take a look at memo 48-07 below!

Included.

Let’s hear MORE from The Gobber now that Enge is OUT. This Gobber sure has made a name for himself with idiotic, short term appointments.

Having once walked side by side what I thought were real conservatives …all of these trough feeding conservative state employees are killing me. I had a dear friend, Bob Gooden, who was a staunch NPRI person who is probably rolling over in his grave right now over all the Gibbons conservative hypocrisies.

I’ve learned the hard way that being a conservative today means you milk the taxpayers to line your own wallets and the wallets of your friends for “public” services. Blackwater, Sierra Nevada Corp., eTreppid, etc.

Yep, rolling over in his grave.

BTW, I had the privilege of working with Raj Mehta. Very smart man. Obviously he was a threat to the teeny Director who can’t manage a handful of employees herself. Oh, those conservative elites!

I’ve worked side by side both Gecol and Mehta. Neither is easy to work with, but at least Mehta is a smart guy. Neither would make it in a corporation where they had to justify their salary.
