Edwards Dropping Out of Presidential Race
John Edwards just dropped out of the presidential campaign race from New Orleans, the place where he announced his intention to run for president originally. He asked Clinton and Obama to pledge to him that they would fight to end poverty.
I wonder if Edwards decided to drop out in an effort to consolidate Democrats before Giuliani’s upcoming endorsement of McCain tonight? And of course the big question is, when will Edwards endorse Obama? What is he waiting for? A position in the Clinton cabinet? The vice presidency?

Edwards was my gut pick from the start, sorry to see him leave so early on. I think he ran a good campaign, with few mis-steps…but it was evident from the start, he was going to be marginalized by the media, for the most part. But, good run, and good luck to him and his family. I am sure he will be around for the fight in November, on some level… but I do not see his platform (anti-corporate, pro working poor, or just the poor in general) and/or support being much of a bump for either front runner, although Obama may get the most miles out of it.
Yes. I think we are going to see an Obama Endorsement tommorrow, right before the debate. And it will make grumpy, pompous, friendless Zeke smile.
From what I was hearing this am on Morning Joe, it
seems everyone thinks that Clinton and Obama will
be battling for the blue collar Dems now.
Edwards could wait awhile to endorse Obama. Before
the later Pennsylvania, Ohio primaries (up in so called
rust belt). Or, he could do it before Tuesday.
The Caroline/Teddy endorsement apparently resulted in
Obama winning (or tying with Clinton) the “live” or
election day voting in Florida! (The early voters put
her easily over the top.)
Tracking in California (before Edwards dropping out) had
Obama ahead in one case recently (35 to 32), but now overall
he’s trending up there and seemingly in a dead heat with
her. He’s ahead in most of the super tuesday states, but these are the smaller ones with lower delegate counts.
Winning California might just do the trick for him!
Loved Obama bringing up the “infrastructure” issue yesterday! Something about the nature of the engineering of
bridges!
Thank God he dropped out. I dont want to see a former trail lawyer as the president.
Obama did NOT win the day of voters in Florida. That is a misconception and misreport that has been spread around, but its not actually true. I’m not going to rehash it here, but this was discussed ad nauseum over at dailykos. Check it out if you want the real scoop.
Hmmm….the California polls show a significant Clinton
lead. So, I’m puzzled by what I read in the SF Chronicle’s
Matier and Ross about this very close tracking poll results.
David Gregory on MSNBC reports that Barack is lessening his
attention (campaign stops) in California to focus on the
non-coastal states, which appear to favor Clinton.
Where will the Edwards’ supporters go? (The ones I know in
California are for Obama. One deciding to vote for Obama after seeing him in Reno on Jan. 14th.)
Reportedly, a half million people have voted by absentee ballot already. In California.
Right now, the “experts” say that Clinton will come out of next Tuesday with a small delegate lead. But, nothing conclusive is expected on that day.
And before anyone jumps on me-I don’t really care who the Dem nominee is. Obama and Hillary are virtually indestinguishable on the issues that matter to me, so it basically comes down to personality. I caucused for Hillary-although I didn’t decide between her and Obama until the night before (the Reagan thing did it for me-I hate Ronald Reagan). But, I really don’t care who is the nominee. At this point I’d like us to just get a consensus and go from there. I’m starting to think Obama has a better chance to beat McCain so in some ways it might be better if he is the nominee.
According to the MSNBC exit polls, he either tied her or slightly beat her in Florida with the live vote.
That was reported this morning on Morning Joe.
(And, no, they weren’t at a bar this time….back in the
studio. So, we can’t blame it on that!)
Just saw that Ralph Nader is forming an exploratory cmt.
I guess he’s preparing for the possibility of a Clinton
nomination. So….if HRC is nominated, I guess we can nap the rest of the year, knowing that Senator McCain will finally make it to the White House.
Mike: Nader said he’ll run against either Clinton or Obama. Apparently he thinks they are both bad candidates. I don’t know what his deal is at this point, but I strongly wonder if he’s not on some Republican pay rolls or something. Its ridiculous. He’s got NO SHOT. He really needs to go away.
Thanks for the news about that, Patrick.
I suspect Ralph would be pretty much ignored by voters
(Greens, etc.) if Obama is the nominee. But, he’s an
outlet for many folks who can’t bring themselves to vote
for Hillary Clinton.
Time will tell.
Edwards was my preferred choice among the final three - I hope his message of economic populism is picked up by whoever the nominee turns out to be.
