Gogol Bordello in Reno

Get ready for a workout Reno, Gogol Bordello is coming to town–to the Grand Sierra on March 14th to be exact. The BBC’s Phill Jupitus has described the band as “a bit like The Clash having a fight with The Pogues in Eastern Europe.” Happy Valentine’s Day to me!

Known for their live shows, I can’t begin to tell you how exciting it is that Gogol Bordello will be gracing our small city with its presence–on a Friday night no less. (Although if the San Francisco show at the Warfield was on a Friday or Saturday night, I’d go there to see them because the crowd would be a lot more fun–no offense.) What do you say Reno? Can we welcome Gogol Bordello with style? Just in case you’re not sure, here’s a couple of doses of what you’re in for:

“Start Wearing Purple” from their new album Super Taranta

“Not A Crime” from Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike

See Gogol Bordello’s Myspace site for even more music.

omg! I’ve never heard of this group! I was trying to figure out if Borat inspired them or they inspired Borat?

I’ve got to take a Polish friend of mine to see them! They are artistically …hysterical!

Thanks for posting!

I’ve been following these guys for a while. These guys are not hysterical “ha ha,” but hysterical “You tools, look what’s happening to what little culture you had.. be human to one another and shake off the bitch dust while I play my accordion.” They predate Borat and will long outlive him, despite the fact they both have accents and mustaches. These guys are what the Pogues once were. I’ve seen them both twice this year, and it pains me to say it, but I had more fun with GB. If there is one concert you will see this year, it should be this one. Glad to see they are coming here. Like the Minx says, let’s host with some style and get ready to see the greatest thing to come to Reno for a long, long time.

p.s. “Start Wearing Purple” is off of their album “Gypsy Punks”–the one before “Super Taranta.” It’s featured in the movie “Everything is Illuminated,” in which Huntz, their singer, stars along side Elijah Woods.

I quite liked Everything is Illuminated. Huntz gave a very good performance and was the real lead even though it was sold here as a Woods vehicle. Unfortunately I’m going to be out of town for their show.

Funny, I totally didnt realize that they was Huntz until you mentioned it. He did make that movie. And of course they are closer to what the Pogues once were–they’re younger for starters and their leader stays a lot more sober. GB has a bit more of the absurd in them which makes them even more interesting–plus the musical influences. I love it when I hear the dub in their stuff…
