Washington Post’s “Women Are Dumb” Article
Honestly, the Washington Post “tongue-in-cheek” article: “We Scream, We Swoon. How Dumb Can We Get” by Charlotte Allen almost left me speechless. Its beyond me how this even got published because it so clearly missed the mark of being tongue-in-cheek. Do editors at the Post’s Outlook section think that it qualifies as such merely because it’s written by a woman? Its always a pleasure to see essentialist garbage mindlessly regurgitated by a woman–now that’s what is really dumb. I bet she also thinks women are funny too.
Here is one of the excellent comments on the article (by scones):
It is one thing to say that there are genetic differences between the sexes, but to say that women are inherently inferior is offensive and inaccurate. Are women’s natural abilities in the humanities a paltry advantage over male counterparts, the very abilities that enabled you to graduate Stanford and compose this piece? And by that token, is a male writer more valuable than a female scientist, if each demonstrates the capabilities of the sex that dominates their field?
There are women who watch Oprah and who swoon over political figures, just as there are women who discovered dark matter and isolated radium. Lest we forget that for every boy genius there are five of his buddies watching Sports Center, women are not the only “dumb” sex. Our chick lit and talk shows are their video games and pro-wrestling matches.
By the way, things this woman has never done–just for the record:
- Watched Grey’s Anatomy
- Bought a Celine Dion CD
- Spent my day talking about Botox
- Read Eat, Love, Pray
- Swooned

All I can add to this is, Phyllis Diller is spinning in her grave. Or she would be if, y’know, she were dead.
