The Real Face of Reno’s New Downtown

Talk about snarky:

“Forget the willfully boho, barfly poseurs and snarky, pseudonymous bloggers. The McLeods are the real face of the new downtown. ”

My first response to this sentence was “WTF?”  (You were trying to get some snark out of me right?).  This blog (as well as this snarky, pseudonymous blogger) has been a booster of downtown since moving into a downtown condo in 2003 and doesn’t appreciate having all of those words (and actions) reduced to such a small idea of identity.  Support of downtown on this blog began formerly in the winter of 2005.  Snark or no snark, there’s a reason city councilpersons have been known to stop by.  Does taking the free bus and watching kayakers in the water make you the real face of downtown?  If so, the homeless dudes who hang out  on the triangle of grass at First and Riverside have been all over it for years. And seriously, does Reno have willful bohos? You are more likely to see punks in the park than anything close to “willful bohos” or penthouse dwellers like the McLeods.  No offense to them.

LOL. While I did enjoy Jonathan’s piece (although judging from the comments to his article, some people didn’t), there is no ‘one’ real face of downtown. You want to know who the real face of downtown is? Try all the UNR students who continually support the plethora of bars downtown every weekend, or how about the brave business owners themselves, who risked a lot more than just selling a house, to open their business in downtown. Hats off to them. I’ll continue to support all of them in my little one mile living radius LOL.
But aside from his snarky comment, I do hope that empty nesters as time goes on, become an inttregal part of downtown. Afterall, one of the primary original missions of covering downtown for myself and even Ken up in Seattle (post much lately, Ken?) is to promote urban living as a viable suatainable way of life, over living in the burbs and commuting 40+ minutes total per day. So, the more empty nesters, the better! Come on downtown!
We can do a new reality show, ‘Battle of the Penthouses’ and feature penthouses from Montage, Belvedere, Riverwalk, and Palladio, see who can out-urbanize and out-decorate the other. Out-urban, out-decorate, out-last!

Dang, I wish I could afford a penthouse on the river!

For now, I have to stick to driving downtown to enjoy a few hours there on weekends.
