Clayton Williams’ Fundraiser for McCain Canceled
Tracy Russo who blogs at Rural Votes alerted me to this story from ABC’s Political Radar:
ABC’s Rick Klein reports: Sen. John McCain on Friday abruptly canceled a Monday fundraiser that had been scheduled at the home of a Texas oilman, after ABC News contacted the campaign inquiring about a verbal blunder the Texan made during an unsuccessful 1990 campaign for governor.
Clayton Williams stirred controversy during his 1990 campaign for governor of Texas with a botched attempt at humor in which he compared rape to weather. Within earshot of a reporter, Williams said: “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”
Oh those wicked southern boys telling jokes about rape. Funny.
What’s most insulting about this whole thing is that McCain only canceled the fundraiser because the media found out about it. No politician should accept any donations from someone who thinks making a joke about rape is even anywhere near appropriate, whether the joke is made in public or in private. It shows an incredible lack of judgment and a fundamental lack of of understanding of rape as a violent crime, and an appalling lack of empathy for rape victims. By the way reporter Rick Klein, a joke about rape is a lot more than a “verbal blunder.”
