Nada Motel Begins Thursday!
I hope Chad Sorg will forgive me for not posting about the Nada Motel earlier, better late than never, right? Tomorrow at noon, the eagerly awaiting art show begins in downtown Reno at the historic El Cortez Hotel and the Townhouse Motor Lodge (both at Arlington and 2nd Street). Check out Nada Motel’s spanking new blog.where Sorg keeps us all updated about what will be happening during the unconventional art show. The Nada Motel’s website is full of information as well.
When: Beginning Thursday, June 26th at noon and lasting through the weekend.
Where: El Cortez Hotel and the Townhouse Motor Lodge (both at Arlington and 2nd Street in downtown Reno)
Food: Saigon Pearl inside the El Cortez Hotel is one of the best restaurants in town. Do yourself a favor and eat there.
From the press release:
“50 artists have already filled 40 motel rooms with art.
Their work will be on display for the public until check-out.
Last year sculptors, painters, photographers, printmakers and performance artists hosted their own works in these rooms. This year the art ranges from the abstract to the real and unreal.
Many doors will be open in two motels downtown. 2nd and 3rd floors of the El Cortez host about 20 rooms
while another 20 rooms exhibit at the Town House across the street. Entertainment all 4 nights. Cameras are encouraged. Most participating artists set up studio in Reno, some hail from CA, LV and Washington. An event like this happened last year assuming the name Dada Motel. To reinforce the newness, each year the name changes. We used the line “get a room, make a show” to reinforce the idea that the artists are promoting themselves on their own dime, we’ve just agreed upon the dates. As arts funding dwindles in public institutions, we’re in critical times for education and appreciation of creativity. We hope that this event brings back a feeling that it’s in our own hands. We’re proud to say that this is an artist-run event.”
Chad Sorg, Bob the manager at the El Cortez, and Ann Tracy, an artist from Sacramento will be interviewed from room 203 of the Townhouse Motor Lodge on Sacramento’s Capitol Public Radio KXJZ 90.5 at 2:20pm.what else.

Regarding the “Spanking New Blog”…
This is mine, not Chad’s (sorry dude)
I have been working on this since last year and if you dig deep enough you can find information back to the original Dada Motel. Some if it has suffered from “Link Rot” but there is a lot of history here. (someone please print all of it and bring it to the Historical Society)
This year I have tried to list all the rooms and artists and encourage the artists to write about thier rooms and visitors to comment on their favorite artists.
please participate…

Myrna, soooo much to talk about, upcoming things.. to touch on a few:
NadaDada presents “Real Men Wear Dresses” @ Amendment 21, not a drag show, but yes, men in dresses, unshaven, no make-up man boots, who the hell knows what you’ll see. Nov. 20th
“YadaYada From NadaDada” (tentative title) will be our 3rd museum exhibition in Las Vegas’ Marjorie Barrick Museum at UNLV, it’s around Jan. 1st, have to solidify that one.. anyway, it’s a benefit for the homeless, with up to 200 pieces of art on display. Portraits of the homeless.. all media and open to EVERY artist in Nevada and then some.
And alas, we plan to have NadaNights @ Amendment21 every month after that to keep people abreast of all the happenings.
Thank you for this beautiful blog Myrna, you’re inspiring.. let’s do lunch! My treat!
