Carly Fiorina Is No Dummy, But Is She A Fool?
If there is one thing Carly Fiorina is, it’s smart, and you’ll never convince me she didn’t see grumpy old grandpa McCain’s ailing candidacy coming a mile away. He’s old. She’s young. He’s short. She’s not too tall. He’s got a short fuse, while she remains cool and collected. He doesn’t know much about economics, and, well, she does. Fiorina’s got what McCain needs–she’s a woman, she’s young, she’s “edgy,” she’s got strong ties to CEOs and could possibly attract the support of more women to his campaign–that is, if he’s brave enough (or should I say enough of a “maverick?) to ask.
But what on earth does Fiorina want with an ailing McCain campaign? How about a catapult to the presidency? Over the last few years, she’s been busy showing Republican boy king makers that she might be their woman in 2012. But, will all that sucking up be worth it? Will leading a party and partnering with a man that clearly does not believe in choice for women satisfy a woman so clearly in favor of it? Contrary to popular belief, McCain’s record on women’s reproductive rights is abysmal. As Dana Milbank’s latest column confirms, Fiorina is not really their kind of woman. Milbank recorded her emphatic stance on how consumer driven healthcare insurance would help…women:
“There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won’t cover birth-control medication. Those women would like a choice.”
Women want choice. Are you listening to yourself Carly? Because I guarantee you a lot of Republicans are listening and when they think they have a better candidate for 2012, they’ll remember worlds like “Those women would like a choice.” The bargain Fiorina is obviously willing to make with the Republican leadership is beyond risky. Will the boy king makers ever let a woman like Fiorina lead in 2012, particularly if she is half of a losing campaign in 2008? It’s a fools bargain if you ask me.

[...] a form of straight talk? Check out McCain’s response to viagra vs. birth control funding I discussed earlier. Thanks for the tip [...]

Nice to see you post more, miss you, XOXO
You have been missed. MoveoverZeke-the one who speaks in third person. - how long have you been doing that or is it a gimmick for your blogging?
…time to have more time with myrna’s posts.
I’d like to naively think that McCain and the Republican Party have grown to the point that they would not only allow such a person to run on their ticket, but that they’d actually embrace such a person. Granted, I’m not from the Heartland, nor have I even visited there, but I’d like to think most Republicans have either stopped caring about this issue, or already were pro-choice. The problem is that there are other issues that seem to go hand in hand, leaving the idea in people’s heads that one equals the other. Perhaps there is someone who can bridge that gap. I know that would scare you guys, though, so you could ever live with it.
Is “you guys” the conservative Republican base that Myrna
presumes would diss Fiorina or the presumed “lefty” Myrna
readership base?? Wasn’t clear on that.
I think we might be seeing a radical change among evangelical Christians, many of whom are voicing, and acting on, on the basis of Jesus’ message of serving others. Therefore, issues like poverty are beginning to gain ascendancy over the issues covering gays and abortion among many evangelical Christians who previously voted
heavily Republican.
Therefore, if Carly F. can demonstrate something of a populist sensitivity combined with pragmatic economic approaches that are no longer rigidly bound to Republican ideological orientation related to the economy (like on taxes, for example), then she may be perceived overall as a post partisan builder of bridges over these deep gaps.
I think Obama’s post partisan approach (recently under fire from the lefties who haven’t been reading what he has been writing for a long time or what he has been saying on the stump for months) will lead to pragmatic solutions that people will feel in groove with and generally happy to support. Maybe the Republicans will feel that they have to nominate someone like her in 2012 if Obama has a reasonably successful first four years (presuming he gets in this time, of course….which, as Malia Obama pointed out to her young friend on the Fourth of July….is no surefire thing).
Myrna…. this blog is so libral, it makes me sick. Carly Fiorina is one of the smartest business minded women in the world and you want to bash her because she is a conservative. Im sure if she was a libral like hilary (yuck) you would be saying that she is the best thing since sliced bread. She is working for John McCain because she believes he is the best canidate for the economy. With her back ground, I will take her word for it.
I meant Myrna and Kid from Vegas specifically. The point of both their inputs, I believe, was that there was some compromising of beliefs. As someone who is registered as a Republican, but would like very much to no have the name of a party determine the way anyone thinks, I was expressing a hope that that tide might be shifting. I’d love for people who seemingly bash one party or the other to not have as their go-to weapon that “Republicans are anti-choice” or “Democrats always want to increase taxes before cutting spending.” It’s clearly a pipe dream, but wouldn’t it be grand? So when I see a legitimate, smart, outspoken pro-choice Republican being considered for that high of a position, I get excited. As I’m excited to see Barack Obama the nominee of the Democrats. The man won it in a fun race to watch. If Fiorina changes her stance, I’ll be very disappointed and it will add to my general cynicism. But if she somehow is offered the position, I think it should scare people who identify with a party first and free thought second, as I think the above mentioned people do.

well what are you reading it for then? masochist? too funny. Carly’s not bad, at least she grew a brain. but aligning herself with McSame? that’s political suicide, in the long run.
I think some people missed the point. I was saying that Fiorina is incredibly smart and undeniable ambitions–I don’t think anyone would suggest otherwise. I hope the Republican leadership would think she’d be a great president in 2012, but I don’t buy it. SO what I’m saying–is that the leadership probably won’t make the right choice when ticks come to tacks.
And Jerz, I’m talking about the Republican leadership who, as you can tell from the current shift in McCain’s campaign, are still playing to those divisive “values” issues–to their shrinking base. It’s clear that the majority of Americans are pro-choice, but that is not necessarily true of lawmakers–that’s where the disconnect occurs. Also, McCain’s record on choice is abysmal. Abysmal. The idea that he is somehow a progressive conservative on this issue is laughable.
Hi, Ryan, it was bugsy who called this blog liberal in
derogatory terms. unkempt jnani would never put down
liberals, though he does come from pov of the Intergral
“Third Way” Politcs. Which, in a nutshell, incorporates
the best of liberalism and conservatism (the external and internal perspectives).
Sorry, mrjerz, I just made the mistake I thought you made!!!
Pajamadeen is the one who correctly put words in my mouth,
words coming from bugsy.
Putting the name of the comment maker at the bottom of the
comment has long confused me. I don’t know why. Addled,
I guess.
She just understand the political marketplace.
If you are a Woman or Minority and are a Democrat, you are just one of millions like you.
However if you jump to the Evil Right and become a Republican, you are one of the few like you in that dark brimstone filled world. Supply and Demand.
I think every Black Republican is a Pundit on TV now for this reason. I wonder if there are actually ANY Black Republicans who are NOT on TV.
But how many Democrat Black Pundits are there?
Gotta think about it, don’t ya?
ps. Liberial Ain’t a Bad Word.
“ps. Liberial Ain’t a Bad Word.”
It is when it’s spelled like that!
