Reno’s Urban Market on West Street Market Opens

Reno’s urban market on West Street opened this week. I have to say that waking up and walking out into the street in my pajamas and picking up some fresh raspberries, peaches, an rainier cherries for breakfast is pretty damn cool. Its also pretty damn cool to come home on Wednesday and Friday night and be able to get some delicious jerk chicken or gyros and freshly made lemonade for dinner is beyond cool. And I can’t forget to mention the fantastic De La Soul inspired music I heard Friday night sponsored by the Holland Project. Yes, WeFi is certainly turning out to be all I hoped it would be. If you didn’t have a chance to check out the market this week, you really should check it out.

Friday morning I bought tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, and
cauliflower, walked home one block and cooked an omelet that
included the last two items. Didn’t have to go to SaveMart,
closest place (before) to get the last two items and suitably fresh (and reasonably priced) versions of the first two.

Pajamas?!?!

The lawn of Ross Manor has been set up as a hang out place until they get the West Street Market courtyard opened.
They’ve taken out the concrete there, now just dirt, so I guess they are moving fast now. They have nice tables and everything set up on the Ross Manor lawn. And, a newly
installed fountain.

I hope there are more EcoNet things over the coming Wednesdays.

I think a center portion of the divider strip has yet to be planted. I have an idea, but it would likely land me in jail. Probably can’t use the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department license there!…….Maintenance of the gardens is going to be a regular job. I’ve been “weeding” out
cigarette butts that are unbelievably deposited there.

They have two Securitas Guards on duty during these events.

The owners of the Five Star Saloon are probrably grinding their teeth during this construction phase. While, the owner of Ace Market is likely grinning all day and night long.

I don’t think that renourbanmarket.com site has anything to do with the west st. market…

Hi Marc,

Relevant page from http://www.renourbanmarket.com
is right here, I think. This is a network of farmers who
sell at farmer’s markets. If they had pictures of the growers, I could tell you for sure. I think so, because I bought some of the veggies from the vendor growers on the
southern end of West Street and they were selling flowers also like I saw on the home page.

Myrna…..I usually don’t agree with you, but I do certainly agree with you regarding the urban Market and how great it was. Its even better knowing how much better its going to be when construction is done.

From Wednesday evenings official removal of the caution tape on the garden to the Friday night festivities to my $4.50 bag of squashes, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and the $2 caulifloweron Saturday, The Urban MArket makes me happy, happy, happy. Loved the Friday night artisans, yummy food and beer and music from the Holland Project. One female security person should get a medal for her work. After I talked with her about discouraging the masses from walking across our community gardern, she took that job so seriously! Unfortunately, she was one middle-aged woman against quite a multidimensional crowd…only a few plants were trampled - but that happened only when her back was turned to try to keep the people off the side of the street where the cars were supposed to use. Craziness - but pretty good energy down there on the street! I say yay! Shout outs to this project!

Oh and…the unplanted piece in the middle of the garden is about a water main issue - from the looks of things - and word out - it’s in the making. Some serious digging has been going on at a very fast pace to get the street back together and the permanent vendors inside! Can’t wait to have those selections - bakery with yummy beignets and coffee in the morning….mmmmmm. Meanwhile - enjoying the present atmosphere on the street is great…remember the Liquid Lounge??? nastiferous for residents!
