Jill Derby on DCCC’s Competitive Red to Blue List

The first evidence that Jill Derby’s challenge to CD 2 incumbent Dean Heller was the recent rating change announced by the Cook Report. Cook changed its rating for the Heller/Derby race to “Likely” Republican rather than “Solid” Republican. Now, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has added Derby to their competitive Red to Blue program. Candidates are chosen because they have been able to exceed expected fundraising goals and because their message of change is getting through to voters. I wonder if my short speech to Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz about Jilly Derby’s fundraising and the fact that with the DCCC’s help, Nevada could send an all woman house congressional delegation when I ran into her at BlogHer had anything to do with this? Hmmm.

From the DCCC press release:

“The candidates for change being named to the DCCC Red to Blue program are running solid campaigns and are committed to making things easier for middle class families in their districts,” said Chris Van Hollen, Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “With less than 100 days to make their case for change to voters in their districts, the Red to Blue program will give these candidates the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive in November.”

According to the Washoe County Registrar, there has been a huge shift in voter registration that leans in favor of Democrats as noted in the Daily Sparks Tribune article (posted on the NSDP site).

“As of July 3, the Washoe County Registrar of Voters office shows a total of 206,699 active voters with 80,476 Democrats, 86,274 Republicans and 39,949 members of the Independent and minor parties, registrar Dan Burk said.”

The registration trend is state-wide, and it’s reasonable to expect Derby to make a better run at Heller this time around. Heller only beat Derby by a few thousand votes in 2006, and Derby was able to take Washoe County. With additional local support from the Obama state campaign, which is determined to elect Democrats up and down the ticket, Derby’s chances are looking better and better every week. Heller should be worried.

Now if only the Ron Paul supporters could make as much of a mess for Heller as they did for the Nevada Republican Convention!
