Cooling My Heels, Waiting for Obama

I just finished a walking tour of Denver–what a fabulous city it’s turned into. I lived in Englewood, a suburb of Denver when I was a kid, but back then, downtown used to be kind of run down, or at least Lower Downtown (LoDo), where I spent most of my time used to be run down. Now it’s full of parks, people, condos, and retail. The DenverInfill blog covers Denver’s downtown redevelopment and has some great DNC photos. Denver is what Reno city officials want Reno to become–I’d say we’re half way there (seriously? A Bon Jovi reference?). I’ll have some photos tomorrow, including some of a man who told us all (meaning everyone but him) “were headed for hell.” Nice, huh? Unfortunately, from this moment on, because I have a loser phone, there will be no more updates about the convention. I’m not lugging my laptop to Invesco and that’s final and I have to get up somewhat early to get the long plane ride home.

But let me tell you what I know now. Believe it or not, I ran into a friend who works in the Obama headquarters in Chicago at the Corner Bakery while eating lunch downtown. I saw her as she was sprinting out the door clearly trying to catch something or someone. A minute later, she ran back into the restaurant so we got a chance to say hello. Apparently, she was sprinting back toward the motorcade because she got a call that it was leaving. but a minute later she got another call telling her she had time. She apologized for being unresponsive to my email yesterday–nice considering she has a few things on her plate that are just a little bit more important than socializing with bloggers. She said that she was looking forward to tonight because when the convention was over, she could finally relax. And if she lasts through the private campaign party, we might have a chance to meet up. That’s when I can liquor her up with mojitos (extra sugar) and get some juicy info for you, or “y’all” as she would say.

So, I’m taking couple of hours to rest up and rehydrate before heading out to Invesco Field (Mile High Stadium). It’s not quite as hot today as it has been, but it’s still hot, and I don’t sit out in the sun for hours for anyone–even Obama, even Bruce. Anyway, will. i. am doesn’t start playing until about 6pm and I already missed Stevie Wonder. Terrance Tolbert, Obama’s State Director in Nevada, gave me some good advice last week–show up late. That’s exactly what I plan to do.
