Tweet the Vote: Twitter Vote Report Project Update
At the moment, the Twitter Vote Report project is an amazing and chaotic storm of volunteer programmers, developers, activists, and partner organizations shaping this octopus into a lean, mean vote reporting machine. In just a few days, where there is a wiki, there will be a fully developed website full of organized information about how to get involved and what specifically you can do.
For those of you who have not read my previous posts on the subject, the Twitter Vote Report project and it’s partners (The Election Protection Coalition, Common Cause, Rock the Vote to name a few) are setting up a voter reporting system that will track several levels of Twitter hashtags to be used by voters on the ground and by watchdog groups tracking voting problems and voter suppression efforts that require responses. Generally, the tags to be used are:
- #votereport
- A system of secondary tags to warn of wait times (#wait:30), machine troubles (#machine), registration problems (#registration), etc.
- #EP combined with the two letter state code for serious legal issues (#EPNV for Nevada) will be tracked by The Election Protection coalition’s staff
- zipcode
Partners like twittervision.com and Plodt.com are planning to track and plot the tweets using maps and there may even be an iPhone application. The data will be stored and used after the election to analyze in multiple ways to improve voter experiences in future elections.
In the meantime….Tweeps! please start following @votereport on Twitter now so you can start helping us spread the news about the project to as many people as possible.
Stay tuned for updates.
