Obama’s Reno Rally This Morning

According to a university scheduling official, about 11,000 people attended the Obama rally this morning at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Peccole Park. I don’t believe in waiting in line, so I left the house at 9:30, hopped on the Sierra Spirit bus and arrived at the rally promptly at 10am after a short walk from the Lawlor Events Center bus stop. My seatmate on the bus was an older gentleman who had already voted and had attended the Palin rally earlier this week. He was clear about his support for Heller but he did not tell me which presidential candidate he voted for. In fact, I met several people who attended both rallies, trying to give equal time to both candidates–a nice gesture if nothing else. Compared to what’s going on in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Las Vegas (Hair flip to The Gleaner).

The Reno Police, bomb squad, sheriffs, K-9 units, secret service, etc., were everywhere and very polite as they held me at a security check point before I was finally allowed through the press entrance. I had a press pass but had to get an Obama campaign staffer to fetch me and escort me into the rally because my name never seems to get on the official list. The indignities I suffer….

Obama’s speech focused on the economy–tax breaks for everyone making less than $250,000, spreading the wealth fairly (what Republicans have been calling “socialism”), yadda, yadda, yadda. In a true test of presidential temperament, Obama responded to a blown generator that cut the mic with the relaxed calm he has become famous for and that infuriates John McCain and his campaign. I’ve included video and photos below.

On a side note, I ran into the delightful Christiane Brown from KJFK’s The Solution Zone and her daughters who hoped to meet Obama (cute but don’t get your hopes up-you should see the photographer rotation routine the Obama campaign puts the press through at these things). The exciting news is that yours truly will be on The Solution Zone Monday at 3:30pm to talk about voter suppression and the two projects I’m involved in–the Voter Suppression Wiki and Twitter Vote Report–two projects you will be hearing a lot more about through election day. You should visit the websites and listen to the show to find out how you can get involved.
